working in registered/licensed child care programs in Jefferson and Lewis Counties.

We strive to offer unique and individualized training that is tailored to meet participant needs. 


In-person training: Free
In-person trainings will be held here at Community Action Planning Council.  Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of your training to sign-in and get settled. Payment:
To complete your registration for training requiring a fee (Heartsaver First Aid CPR, All Virtual Training and virtual trainings), your payment must be received by the registration deadline. We will provide one courtesy call to remind you that the deadline is approaching. After the deadline, your seat will be opened up for someone else. Please see the training policies at the bottom of the page for details.

Principles of Child Development (CD)

Child Development and Red Flags (2 hrs)  This training will provide a refresher on child development, including a review of the basics of child development, milestones, age ranges, and sequence of development. We also discuss what to do if a caregiver has a concern about a child’s development; how to talk to a parent or family and what the process for referral, evaluation, and identification looks like from the Early Intervention and Preschool perspective.

School-Age Development (2 hours)  This course will review developmental milestones for the school-age child (age 6-12). Milestones will focus on physical, social/emotional, and learning changes. Instant Interactions (1.5 hours)  A young child's developing brain doesn't require expensive toys, but it does require positive connections and interactions.  This training will explore how a young child's brain develops and how everyday interactions can be enhanced to encourage healthy brain growth and development.                                  OCFS Topic Areas:  Principles of Child Development, Child Daycare Program Development

Expectations and Positive Guidance (1.5 hrs)  When you’re faced with challenging behavior from the children in your care, your first step should be to ask yourself, “Are my expectations developmentally appropriate?” In this workshop we will talk about what it means to offer developmentally appropriate practices for young children and reflect on our own “hot buttons” and expectations for children’s behavior. We will discuss what it means to guide children's behavior and develop positive guidance responses for behavior challenges.

Promoting Problem-Solving Skills (1.5 hrs)  Where groups of children are together, conflict isn’t far behind. Your responses to everyday disagreements and disappointments can help children learn to solve their own problems. This workshop will provide some simple strategies to empower children, reduce challenging behavior, and create more peaceful, happy moments in your program.

Anti-Bias Education Series (1 hr sessions)   This series contains four 1 hour sessions.  The topics include Racial Bias, Culture and Gender Bias, Poverty Bias, and Anti-Bias Education-What is it and how to create it.  The sessions are designed to have participants examine biases and how they impact a student's education and performance.  The session on Anti-Bias Education will examine the principles of anti-bias education and explore ways to implement it in a classroom or program.  It is not required to attend each session.

Developing a Growth Mindset in Young Children (2 hrs)  In this training we will look at the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset.  We will also explore strategies and practices child care providers can use to develop a growth mindset with children in their care.

Nutrition and Health Needs of Children (NH)

What Makes a Happy Meal? (2 hours)  As caregivers, you play a role in helping young children establish healthy habits and positive food attitudes. This can be difficult because each of us has different preferences, needs and ideas of what makes a happy meal. In this workshop we will explore our own feelings about food and eating, discuss challenges faced when planning, preparing and serving meals in child care, and develop strategies to help make mealtime a positive experience for everyone.

Let's Get Physical (1 hr or 2 hr option)   Explore simple ways to encourage children to be more active throughout the day. The activities we will share use only inexpensive equipment, work in small spaces, and can be enjoyed in home-based and center-based childcare settings as well as by families in their homes. We will talk about the importance of physical activity and the benefits for young children, and you will also learn how to lead early childhood physical activities that are developmentally appropriate and inclusive.

Health and Safety Review and Refresher (2 hrs) Need a refresher on health and safety practices?  Want to make sure you are up-to-date and following the required regulations for daily practices like washing hands, changing diapers, cleaning surfaces, and more?  When is the last time you looked at your Health Care Plan?  We’ll be doing all this and more during this fun and interactive training. This training we will focus on the day to day practices in child care settings  that contribute to the health and safety of children.

Business Record Maintenance and Management (BZ)

Marketing Matters (1.5 hrs)  Virtual Only! Marketing your program can help build relationships with other businesses, strengthen your reputation in the community, and maintain enrollment. This workshop will explore basic marketing strategies, how customer relationships impact your business, and effective use of social media.

Child Abuse and Maltreatment Identification and Prevention (CAM)

Child Abuse and Maltreatment: Reasonable Cause and Reporting Requirements (1.5 hrs) In this training, we will review indicators of abuse, discuss the role of mandated reporters, define reasonable cause to suspect, and examine requirements for reporting serious injury / incident. We will also review program policies and procedures for responding to emergency situations.

Education and Information on the Identification, Diagnosis, and Prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)

Identifying and Preventing Abusive Head Trauma (1 hr)  This training will discuss what Abusive Head Trauma, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and other brain injuries young children may be exposed to.  We will also explore ways providers can support families to prevent these devastating injuries from occurring.

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Focused on the Understand of Trauma and Nurturing Resiliency (ACES)

The ABCs of ACEs and Trauma (1.5 hours)  In this training participants will learn about Adverse Childhood Experiences and trauma. We will explore what ACEs and Trauma are and how they affect early childhood development in children.

Children with Special Needs (SN)

Working with Children with Special Needs:

Autism Spectrum Disorders and Sensory Needs (1 hr)

This training will examine the characteristics that commonly accompany Autism Spectrum Disorders and sensory needs. Participants will discuss how these characteristics look in the classroom/program and the impact on learning.

Down Syndrome (1.5 hrs)

This training will talk about Down Syndrome, the characteristics, and how it impacts a child in child care and learning environments.

Rare Diagnoses in Special Education (2 hours) This training will examine the characteristics and symptoms that accompany Cystic Fibrosis, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.  Participants will also consider reasonable accommodations their program could make to allow children with these conditions access to participation and learning.

First Aid and CPR Courses 

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Full Day $75
The American Heart Association Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Course is a 6 hour  in person training.  You will be certified in Infant, Child and Adult CPR with the use of an AED as well as Basic First Aid.  This course is approved for Educational Incentive Scholarship (EIP) funds for qualifying individuals working in licensed/registered child care programs. F/GFDC providers may  also choose to participate with VOICE professional development training program.  

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Blended Course  $75
This course consists of an online training with the American Heart Association, followed by a classroom skills session.  Participants will receive a link to the online training after paying the $70 course fee. Certificate of completion of the online course is required before attending the skills session. Please check our calendar or registration form (scroll down) for dates and payment details. 

Distance Learning Courses

Distance Learning Courses are email based trainings where participants will correspond with one of the trainers here at JLCP.  Each training consists of 12-13 modules  and participants will have 10 days to complete the training.  For more information about Distance Learning please call 315-782-4900 ext. 239. 

Toddlers and Literacy: What Works and What Counts (6 hours of training)
This reflective email-based course is brought to you by the Region III Infant-Toddler Network. Learn more about this FREE 6-hour course and how you can participate by contacting Morgan at 315-782-4900 ext. 239.
When it comes to literacy, toddlers are in the prime time to develop the foundation for all future learning. In this course we will look at what toddlers are like, how they learn and how we make decisions about our work with them. You‘ll learn literacy concepts that count and literacy practices that work with toddlers.

Training Policies

Registration & Payment: To register for training, register online or complete a registration form and  submit with payment, where applicable, to CAPC by mail or in person by the registration deadline.  CAPC is not responsible for payments that are left with or handed to anyone other than Admin staff. Registration can be completed at https://forms.gle/WYLYr9Gf8qAfo3gNA or download and print at www.capcjc.org/programs/jlcp/training/.  

Accepted payment: cash, check payable to CAPC, money orders, purchase orders and EIP Award Notice. If you receive EIP scholarship for training for which you have already paid, CAPC will  issue a reimbursement. You are responsible for any difference between the award amount and the cost of the class and payment must be received prior to class.  All checks returned to CAPC for insufficient funds subject to current returned-check fee.  Post-dated checks not accepted. 

Cancellations: If a class you have paid for is cancelled you will be notified and issued a training pass, equivalent to the amount you paid, to use toward another training within the next year.  Training pass will be issued only if you cancel prior to the scheduled workshop.  After business hours dial x 239 for voice mail.  

Certificates and Training Records:  Certificates for trainings other than ECETP Webcast training will be given to participants upon completion of a training and receipt of full payment. We will provide a record of your JLCP  training upon request.  

ECETP Webcast Training:  Photo ID is required.  If you are registered and can not attend, please call 800-2959616.  Participants must arrive by 6:45 pm, stay until 9 pm and  receive a passing grade on the multiple-choice test in order to receive credit for attending. Certificates accessible in participant ECETP accounts or mailed..

Child Daycare Program Development (PD)

 Quality Environments for Children (1 hr)  There’s a lot of talk around the importance of high-quality child care, what it means, and what it looks like. Is your program a good example? Would you like to make changes but you don’t know where to begin? This workshop will help you evaluate your space and materials using the Environment Rating Scale and provide you with tools to create a plan to make your program a more meaningful place for children.

What is DAP? (1.5 hrs) This little acronym gets thrown around a lot, but what does it actually mean? Let’s take a step back to talk about the basics of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, how young children learn and develop, and your role as an early childhood professional.

Navigating Conflict and Communication Pitfalls (1.5 hrs) Conflict is a normal part of our daily lives, but many of us struggle to manage these situations effectively. This workshop presents an opportunity to evaluate our own values and beliefs, and consider how they can impact how we respond to conflict. We will examine cooperative strategies we can use to navigate conflict in our lives, and discuss positive communication strategies.

Creating Racially and Culturally Friendly Environments (2 hours)   In this course we will discuss current concepts of race and culture and the impact those concepts have had on early childhood education.  The training will also explore ways to create culturally and racially friendly programs and environments.

Purposeful Planning (1 hour)  Young children need many opportunities to practice emerging skills and expand on interests. Through observations and interactions, you can learn a great deal about the needs of the children in your care and create opportunities for each child that will further their development. In this training we will review different observation methods and how to use observations to plan meaningful learning opportunities.

What's Next? Using Schedules and Routines (1.5 hrs)  Do you like to plan your day and know what to expect? Kids do, too! A visual schedule can help children become more independent, reduce anxiety, and provide cues for transitions. In this workshop we will discuss the benefits of having routines and a predictable schedule, and we will also examine transition times and strategies for keeping children engaged.
