Welcome to Canutillo Middle School STEAM Academy 2022-2023. This year, as we return to the classroom, we face new challenges and opportunities. Theatre Arts provides you with a unique opportunity to express yourselves in this ever-changing world. I look forward to supporting you on this journey, so feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about our program.

GOALS

(taken from Theatre Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills)

Theatre empowers students to explore relationships, and ideas. It engages all students through active learning, critical thinking, and innovative problem solving. It increases student academic achievement, higher-order thinking, communication, and collaboration skills, making theater applicable to college readiness, career opportunities, workplace environments, social skills, and everyday life. Students develop cultural awareness through exploration, leading to creative expression. Creativity, encouraged through the study of theater, is essential to nurture and develop the whole child.

There are four foundations which provide structures for organizing knowledge and skills students will acquire: inquiry and understanding; creative expression; historical and cultural relevance; and critical evaluation and response.

Through inquiry and understanding using elements of drama and conventions of theatre, students develop perception of self, human relationships, and the world.

Through creative expression, students communicate through drama, think artistically, build positive self-concepts, relate to each other, and connect knowledge to other content areas.

Through historical and cultural relevance, students increase their understanding of heritage and traditions in theatre and the diversity of world cultures as expressed in theatre.

Through critical evaluation and response, students learn to accept constructive criticism, revise personal views to promote creative and critical thinking, and develop the ability to appreciate and evaluate live theatre.
