About Performing Arts in Canton

Rodman Early Childhood Center

The preschool music classes are designed to nurture the inherent musicality and curiosity of preschoolers. Activities include lots of singing, chants and rhymes, listening games, patterns to echo, and movement games, all of which nurture the children's musical development while satisfying their need to learn in a holistic environment.

Hansen, Kennedy, and Luce Elementary Schools

Each of our elementary schools offer students the opportunity to develop foundational music skills in a variety of collaborative and independent activities. Activities include movement, instrument playing, singing, musical games, composition, improvisation, and more! As students progress through the program, they can expand their musical experience through our Band and Strings programs. 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students may choose to participate in our Mallet Madness program. 4th Grade students may choose to play a string instrument. 5th Grade students may choose to play a string and/or band instrument and they have the unique opportunity to participate in the 5th Grade musical production!

Galvin Middle School

The Galvin Middle School offers both general music classes and performing ensembles. All students can engage in multiple opportunities including band, chorus, orchestra, chamber orchestra, jazz band and each year's musical theater production. Students create music, perform on a variety of instruments, and listen, analyze, and respond to different musical styles from classical masterworks to the blues to world music. Through all this, they have opportunities for self expression, to practice a growth mindset, and to explore all of what makes music wonderful!

Canton High School

Canton High School offers two types of course: performing ensembles and music electives. Our performing ensembles include chorus, orchestra, band, and jazz band. Our music electives include music technology, guitar, and piano. We also offer acting, dance, and theater production classes. The "performing arts wing" is where so many students find a home. It is a happy, busy, and LOUD area!!! We welcome every student who wants to explore their talent.

CHS Drama Club

“The show must go on...” A common phrase of reassurance used throughout the world of theater and performing arts. This phrase has become more of a rule than an encouraging saying and in the midst of COVID 19, the Canton High School Drama Club has been living by it. While the pandemic has hindered other aspects of school and everyday life, the CHS Drama Club intends to continue doing what they do best: entertaining, inspiring, and even for just a few hours transport people to another reality. The world that we live in now can be stressful and overwhelming, but the COVID 19 pandemic won’t stop us from putting on a great show.

This year, the CHS Drama Club has taken the necessary adjustments and precautions head on and scheduled two shows that will be pre-recorded for viewers to watch right from the comfort of their own homes. Our Tech Crew is working tirelessly to develop sound effects, backdrops, props and costumes to bring these shows to life through the screen. Actors are rehearsing through daily Zoom calls while learning their lines and developing their characters. Students will film their parts of the play individually and student editors will add effects to create a movie-like show.

Our first play is called Sideways Stories from the Wayside School, a wacky children’s show sure to delight the whole family. This play takes place in a school built 30 floors high and is full of crazy teachers, unique students, mysteries, mayhem, and so much more. She Kills Monsters, an action-packed dark comedy, is about young people searching for identity and connection while exploring the magic and adventure of Dungeons and Dragons.

The CHS Drama Club is putting their best foot forward this year with the changes and adaptations necessary, and we are so excited for you to see what we have in store. We were thrilled to offer you our Virtual Fall Coffeehouse and One Act Plays, and invite you to explore our website and Youtube Channel for more. Despite the circumstances, we are pushing through safely, and fulfilling our mission of delivering an enjoyable theater experience for all, because at the end of the day, the show must go on.
