11/7/23
To the Canton ISD Community,
On behalf of the Canton ISD Board of Trustees and the Canton ISD staff, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to each member of our community for your support and participation in our recent bond election. We are excited to announce that both Proposition A and Proposition B have passed. The passage of the 2023 Bond Propositions will allow our district to meet our district’s needs for many years to come.
The 2023 Bond is the result of long-range planning and the work of past administrations, the Board of Trustees, and members of the Canton ISD faculty, staff, and community. I would like to thank the members of our Strategic and Long-Range Planning Committee for their time, input, and commitment to our district over the past year.
Over the next several months we will begin working on the implementation of these projects and will keep our community informed throughout the progress. Once again, thank you for your continued support of our district.
Respectfully,
Brian Nichols
Superintendent
Why is Canton ISD having a bond?
The district formed a Strategic Planning Committee at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year to represent the Canton ISD community. The goal of creating the committee was to involve as many stakeholders in Canton ISD to evaluate the current and long-term needs of the school district. The committee served as the vehicle to help guide the direction of the district, as well as identified needs and provided recommendations.
One of the goals developed by the committee was to optimize resources to enhance student success through safe, state of the art facilities that enhance a positive learning environment and foster student and community pride. An objective for the committee was to collaborate on the idea of moving forward with building a 5th campus due to enrollment growth projections and as a result of the TASB's (Texas Association of School Boards) Facility Services study of the district from the spring of 2022.
Here is what TASB's Facility Study Revealed:
Capacity Analysis: Obtain a clear picture of the total and functional space, utilization, and efficiency of our facilities.
Educational Adequacy Assessment: Establish how well our current and future educational programs are supported by our facilities and future facility plans.
Site, Systems & Components, and Condition assessment: Understand the physical state of facilities right now, including building envelope, building systems, code compliance, and maintenance needs.
Site Safety & Security evaluation: Assess the safety and security measures in place for the protection of students, staff, and visitors.
ADA Accessibility evaluation: Provide guidance on compliance with ADA Standards.
Identification of Priority Projects: With Priority Projects clearly identified for each building, our district can appropriately plan and budget for projects most important for improving the educational environment of your facilities.
TASB stated that with adequate maintenance, the campuses should continue to serve the district for an additional 25-30 years.
An additional campus is needed to alleviate capacity concerns as the district grows which will help in the generations to come.
This would assist to lessen the traffic flow on Buffalo Street & Redirect Current Traffic on Highway 243.
It would also provide space for additional course offerings at the other campuses.
