Background information on 'Grease' and the drive in movie.
Set in 1959, students at Rydell High School start a new school year.
A teenage love story between Danny Zuko, leader of the ‘Burger palace boys’ and Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl in school.
The name for the musical comes from ‘Grease Lightening’ the name of the new (used) car belonging to Kenickie (one of the Burger Palace Boys).
In one of the scenes Danny and Sandy go to a drive in movie theatre.
Students need to design and make food holders for popcorn and hot dogs that would be props for the drive in movie scene.
The popcorn boxes and hot dog trays will be this shape:
Students will need to design at least 1 of each shape box in a 1950's style that would be suitable for the movie scene.
Some students could be challenged to draw their own 3d cube shape to add their design onto showing each side of the shape.
Some students could be challenged to design multiple options for each box and create a range of different items with similar designs.
Some students could be supported by providing an outline of the shapes to draw their design onto or draw the 2d shapes (squares and rectangles) and draw their design in these.
Example Designs:
Prototyping.
Discuss what a prototype is and why designers prototype their products.
Using the template for the popcorn box, students should draw their chosen design onto the box shape.
Carefully cut the around the edge of the outline and glue the sides together.
Making a template for a prototype.
Using a ruler and a pencil mark out the template for the Hot Dog Tray.
The bottom of the box should be 15cm by 3cm.
The sides should be 3cm high.
The template should look like this
Students should then add their design to the template and cut and assemble the box.
Some students could be challenged to adjust the shape of their hot dog box, it could be open ended, have a lid, have curved edges for example.
Some students could be supported in this task by having the template printed for them or half of the template printed to be completed.
