Activities

As an organization, we were involved a number of activities over the years, not all of which were solely within Canada.

Current activities and projects

CanSMOF has authorized a committee to bring the 85th World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon) to Montréal. They began their activities in January 2024, and have been active since. The Site Selection vote will be held at the 83rd Worldcon in Seattle, WA, USA.  More information can be found at montreal2027.ca. 

Past events

• Our first project was to bring the 67th World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) to Montreal for 2009. Nicknamed Anticipation, this was a successful endeavour, with over 4000 attending at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal. 

Other events we have held:

• SMOFCon, Toronto, Ontario, 2013. A small conference devoted to the arts and magic of holding a genre-based convention.

• Costumecon 2020. A convention devoted to costuming. Cancelled during the first day due to Covid.

• World Fantasy Convention, Montréal, Québec, 2021.

• SmofCon, Montréal, Québec, 2022. Originally schedule for 2021, this was rescheduled to 2022.

• Nasfic Winnipeg, Manitoba, 2023. Nicknamed Pemmi-Con.

Anticipation 2009

Anticipation was our first event, held in August 2009 at the Palais des Congrés de Montréal. Some 4000 persons attended.

Financial assistance to other events

There are a number of events we have helped out financially:

• SMOFCon Scholarships 2011-22: We have give out a number of grants to enable a variety of conrunners to be able to attend this annual convention.

• Draconis: A small gaming convention in Montreal.

• Nippon 2007.

• CoNZealand 2020: A startup grant was given to this WorldCon once this convention was awarded.
