Performance Programme

SCA Performance Programme guidance and application process

The SCA Performance Programme is set up to support the best Scottish Paddlers in Sprint, Slalom and Paracanoe as they progress towards international representation and inclusion in British Canoeing World Class Performance Programme squads.

This site aims to outline the ethos behind our programme and the application details for the 2023-2024 squads.

We strive to put people at the centre of what we do. We are passionate about developing athletes not only to become elite performers but also as people

Participation at every level in the pathway presents a host of opportunities and challenges that can have a significantly positive impact on aspiring athletes in the long term, regardless of what level of the sport they eventually achieve.

Our goal is that whatever the performance outcome of participation in our Performance Squads, paddlers leave having enjoyed a positive experience.

Values

Balance

We know that paddling is only one part of an athlete's life and performance shouldn't be pursued at the exclusion of all else. In fact achieving a balance between sport and other aspects of life that bring joy and fulfilment will be a long term benefit to performance.

Below are some of the aspects that the programme aims to balance. Providing sporting support and expertise on one hand and promoting other aspects of life and sport on the other.

Integration

Without the support of families and the wider community, the programme will not thrive, also without engagement and community, much of the benefit of sport is lost.

We need the support of clubs, hubs and the competition structure before, during and after inclusion within the performance programme. We also need to support them.

Care

We all care deeply about what we do. Importantly we strive to demonstrate that we care.

Some of the key pillars of our programme that we care about every day.

Application process

The application process takes two elements into account:

Timeline

A 4 year approach to athletes

Throughout an athlete's journey in the Performance Squad we will take a long term view of athlete development. Therefore achievement criteria will be applied with consideration of progression and where an athlete is in the journey. The four year approach for each individual athlete is described here:

Year 1 - Open

Flexibility in the attainment of the achievement criteria, based on the athlete's profile. This should support the feed of athletes in the different disciplines, with an aim to have athletes in all Olympic classes.

Year 2 - Confirm

Athlete’s retention based on proven progression toward World Class Programme standard even if racing achievement may not have been yet reached.

Year 3 & Year 4 - Raise the bar and deliver

Athlete's retention may be specifically based on progression in relation to racing & performance standard achievement. We may fully apply the selection criteria.

Achievement Matrix

This provides an overview of the performance standards and athlete progression expectations required for programme qualification.

Squad inclusion is not based on the matrix in isolation; but it does present a primary, first filter.

Athlete Profile

In the application form please provide information that helps us understand you as and athlete and a person.

The Athlete Profile is what the inclusion panel looks at when considering an athlete’s potential progression over the different stages of the pathway.

This approach follows research into talent development - as today’s achievements alone are not a sufficient indicator of tomorrow’s success at world class level.
