Knight Family Handbook
School Hours and Attendance
School Hours
School hours are 8:00am–2:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays are early release, so hours are 8:00am–1:30pm.
7:45 am-8:00am, students may be dropped off at the south end of the school (cafeteria doors). Traffic is one way, so enter on SW 4th Avenue and exit on Grant Street. Please do not stop in the traffic lanes on Grant Street for drop-off or pick up. Students may not be dropped off before 7:45 am, as supervision is not available.
Do not pull into handicap spaces unless you have a handicap pass displayed.
Times are adjusted one hour later on Wednesdays to accommodate for our 1:30 dismissal time.
Attendance
Success in school depends on regular attendance. Therefore, unnecessary absences should be avoided. Oregon law provides only three allowable reasons to miss school: illness, emergency or when prior arrangements have been approved by the principal. If your child does have to miss school, please call the office before 8:15am. Please send a note to your child's teacher explaining the absence when your child returns to school.
LATE ARRIVALS/EARLY DEPARTURES
Arriving Late to School
Students arriving after the 8:00am start time will be marked tardy.
Mid-day Appointments or Early Departures
We encourage parents to schedule medical/dental appointments outside of the school day. When it is necessary to pick-up your early, please send a note to your child's teacher. When you arrive at the school, please come to the front doors, ring the doorbell and one of our secretaries will assist you.
Transportation
Car/Walking Drop Off & Pick-up
Arrival
If you'll be dropping your student off at school, please enter the side parking lot and drive all the way to the end of the curb.
Students must remain in the vehicle until a staff member directs them to exit.
K-5 students will proceed to the cafeteria entrance.
6th grade students will proceed directly to their classroom.
Students may not under any circumstance be dropped off before 7:40am. There is no supervision available before this time, and it's essential that students go directly from their car to their classroom.
Dismissal
Pick-up students will wait in two separate areas: the cafeteria (K-2), behind the school (3-6).
Students that are walking home will exit the front entry doors.
Students must be picked up by 2:40pm. (1:40 on early release Wednesdays) There is no supervision available after this time.
Drop-off and pick-up may go a bit more slowly than usual in the beginning.
We thank you in advance for your patience!
Changes to Transportation Plans
If you need to make a change to your child's dismissal plan for the day (e.g., picking up instead of having your student ride the bus), notify us before 2:00pm (1:00pm on early release Wednesdays). To avoid end-of-day confusion, changes to end-of-day plans going home can't be changed after this time.
Changes must be entered as a note, emails, or phone calls.
Please keep changes to your child's afternoon transportation plans to an absolute minimum.

LESSONS FOR SCHOOL LIFE
Knight Elementary uses a curriculum called Second Step which integrates academics with social and emotional learning. Students from kindergarten through 6th grade learn and practice vital social skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem solving and cooperation. These essential life skills help students in the classroom, on the playground, and at home. Second Step is an evidence-based program used with 7 million children in 21 countries. For more information, see their website at www.secondstep.org
What to Do When You Are Angry
How does my body feel (emotions)?
2. Calm down:
Take three deep breaths.
Count backwards, slowly.
Think nice thoughts.
Talk to myself.
3. Think out loud to solve the problem.
4. Think about it later:
Why was I angry?
What did I do?
What worked?
What didn’t work?
What would I do differently?
Second Step Problem Solving
1. What is the problem?
2. What are some solutions?
3. For each solution ask:
Is it safe?
How might people feel?
Is it fair?
Will it work?
4. Choose a solution and use it.
Is it working? If not, what can I do now?
SCHOOL ATTIRE
The basic guideline for clothing and shoes is that they should not distract from the learning environment and that they are safe. Flip flops and open toed sandals are not safe for school as children are out and about during recess, playing on the grass field. Wearing flip flops or open toed sandals means that children cannot participate fully in the safe learning environment available for them at Knight Elementary.
Clothing that reveals undergarments or needs to be adjusted throughout the day for the student to be comfortable or covered is distracting and inappropriate for school (i.e., pulling down short shorts or short skirts, adjusting tank tops with spaghetti straps, pulling tops up to cover the chest area and shoulders, etc.). These clothing selections may be appropriate for other events or activities, they are not appropriate for school which requires students to be active and engaged. Please help your child select clothing that is appropriate for school.
Hats and sunglasses need to be removed upon entering the building.
PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICES
In order to ensure that personal communication devices brought from home (PDAs, cell phones, iPads, etc.) do not disrupt the learning environment at school all such devices need to remain in a student's backpack on silent mode while at school. If there is a need for a student to contact their parent during school hours, the student must use a school phone. Please do not text or call your child, on their cellphone, during school. If a student accesses such device while at school, the device will be held in the office until the end of the school day. If this continues to be a problem, the parent will be required to come to the school and pick up device. The district is not liable for such devices brought to school.
FIELD TRIPS
Sometimes during the school year a teacher may decide to have their class participate in a field trip. A teacher may ask for the help of adult volunteers to supervise. Chaperones are to supervise students under the direction of the teacher. Most of the time, we need a small number of adults to help with field trips. Siblings, cousins, etc. are not allowed to go on these field trips. Again, if you are asked to chaperone, it is to help supervise students.
School Closure
In case of hazardous or emergency conditions, the superintendent may alter district and transportation schedules as appropriate to the particular condition. In the event of school closures or late-starts, all local major radio and television stations will carry the announcements. You can add the app “Flash Alert Messenger” to your smart phone or subscribe to Flash Alert on our webpage: www.knight.canby.k12.or.us.

Medications at School
If your student requires medication during school hours, you will need to contact the school office and set up a time to complete an authorization form and drop off the medication.
You can fill out the form ahead of time, but we will also have paper copies available.
You must bring the medication with you at this time labeled and in its original container; students may not transport medications.
VISITORS AND VOLUNTEERS
Adult Visitors to our school
For the protection of the students, visitors must comply with the following procedures:
All visitors, including parents or regular volunteers, must report to the school office to sign-in and obtain a name tag before entering a classroom or any other part of the school.
Adult visitors are not allowed to visit at breakfast, lunch or recess. If you would like to have lunch with your child please sign them out at the office, leave campus to have lunch, and then sign your child back into school.
Volunteers
Volunteering gives parents, grandparents, and community members a way to keep connected with their child’s school life and offers our school invaluable support! Some ways to volunteer are classroom assistance (helping with bulletin boards, tutoring, helping with small groups, etc.), workroom assistance, library assistance, art literacy, health screening, reading, math tutoring, and helping with Family Nights.
All volunteers are required to fill out a Background Check and show official photo identification.
Please refer to our Volunteer/Chaperone Handbook, in the office.
Check in with your child's teacher for volunteer opportunities.
