In our first Decolonizing Subject Headings professional development session, a panel of librarians shared their efforts to create a more inclusive environment for books by and about Indigenous peoples within existing library systems such as Library of Congress subject codes. Now, lizabeth Barker of Orca Book Publishers, Tom Richardson of BookNet Canada, Lauren Stewart of BookNet Canada, and moderator Mat Buntin of University of Alberta Press provide an overview of current tagging systems used by publishers, Thema and BISAC. The session explores how publishers can best represent books by and about Indigenous peoples within systems that have not yet been decolonized. Presenters discuss what is taking place in and outside of what is currently known as Canada to indigenize subject codes, and how publishers can use BISAC, Thema, and advanced metadata to achieve equitable, appropriate, and broad visibility for their titles.
