How can we make our workplace better?

In 2024, we started a nice collaboration with the Department of Human Sciences of the University of Milano-Bicocca, and we organized a series of seminars to learn how we could make our Unit better.
The seminar has been held by Dr. Federica Cavazzoni, Eugenia Giovanna Campanella, Ecaterina Bordianu, and Giorgia Fasola as a part of a broader project regarding the working environment within academia, with a special focus on gender issues.
The seminars took place in the university of Milnao-Bicocca on the 9th and 30th of May.
How is the Astrophysics Unit doing?
[June-September 2023]
We have organized an anonymous survey to understand the climate within our Astro group. We believe it was a good opportunity for everyone, especially early-career people, to safely express if something was wrong. PhD or master's students have to build their careers, and openly discussing problems with supervisors or senior researchers is usually difficult. But the first step in solving a problem is to speak up! We are proud to have provided such an opportunity.
The survey was proposed to master students, Ph.D.s, postdocs, and professors belonging to the astrophysics unit of the University of Milano-Bicocca. Almost 90 people participated!Â
We presented our results during a dedicated seminar, which sparked a lot of discussion! It was great to see so many people interested and eager to work together to find solutions to the problems that emerged. To continue the discussion, we organized a lunch, and almost the entire division attended, showing that many people truly care about making our group better!
