Board Transitions
Scott Hoskins, Clerk/ President of the Board from Nov. 2020-Oct. 2022
“I look forward to taking on the clerk role for the Camp Onas Board and working closely with Holly and Matt, as I see the camp to be one of the best hopes for our future!”
Scott has given a considerable amount of volunteer time this spring replacing the wooden roof and supports of our ornamental well, which is a cherished part of the Camp Onas scenery ... Thank you, Scott! We are grateful for your generosity and the application of your considerable stagecraft experience to this beloved Onas vignette.
The Friends Camp Association of PA Board of Directors has, throughout the pandemic, met virtually to navigate the challenges COVID-19 has meant for Camp Onas, and in October reconvened in person for the first time in nearly two years, holding a Board Retreat at Camp Onas.
Before the pandemic, and as it's continued the Board has held one key goal: Position Camp Onas for a long and vibrant future.
Last year, Scott Hoskins transitioned in as board President/ Clerk when Stephen Kunkel's 2-year term as President/Clerk drew to a close.
Scott previously served as Vice President/ Assistant Clerk, and Maike Haehle, former Clerk of the board's Governance Committee, has stepped into the role.
Scott is a member of Newtown Monthly Meeting, a parent of two former campers, and a retired film and stagecraft teacher (George School). While Scott has been in the role of Clerk/President for a year now, his tenure on the board spans more than a decade, and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, both specific to Onas and also to other Quaker organizations.
Scott is recently retired from a 34-year tenure at George School (a Quaker boarding and day school), where he taught Stagecraft and Film/Video Production. In his retirement, Scott enjoys directing his energy and attention toward volunteer work with All Hands and Hearts, Habitat for Humanity, and the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank.
Scott is excited about this new level of engagement with the FCA Board:
I look forward to taking on the clerk role for the Camp Onas Board and working closely with Holly and Matt, as I see the camp to be one of the best hopes for our future!
October, 2021 Board of Directors Retreat, facilitated by Dr. Ari Betof, of Mission and Data.
Thank you to Steve!
We asked Steve, who is a member of Solebury Meeting and the parent of a former camper and counselor to reflect on his time clerking the board of directors:
It is difficult to look back on two whole years when the last 18+ months have been so out of the ordinary.
There is no denying that the “Coronapocalypse,” as I call it, befogs all that came before.
Except it doesn’t, because what came before is precisely what made the crisis manageable for Camp Onas.
Our priority over the last three years has been around planning to renovate or replace Camp facilities that need to be updated. To do that, we needed to know what Onas could spend on the projects, and what we would need to raise and borrow. This meant understanding how much money Onas would need in its reserves to make it through a “disaster,” by which we meant an unfortunate event that might cause us to cancel a summer.
When it became clear that the unfortunate event was upon us, we were able to focus on the care and safety of our campers and staff, because we already had a plan for the worst case.
I am hugely thankful to Holly and Matt for leading us first in the preparation and then through the decision and, of course, for the hard work putting together virtual programs for our campers and staff (and I suspect a few parents), and then to mount the 2021 season. This was no ordinary effort.
We will soon be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Camp Onas. I am confident that even with the uncertainty we still face, our Directors, our board and most of all our campers and staff, will be able to enjoy next summer and a hundred more with renewed facilities and all the old traditions plus, I’m sure, some new ones.
Steve will remain on the Onas Board and looks forward to having more time for committee work, including clerking the committee working on rebuilding the showerhouses!
Thank you Steve! We appreciate all you’ve given and continue to give to Camp Onas!
Stephen Kunkel, Clerk/ President of the Board from Nov. 2018 through Nov. 2020
The Friends Camp Association of Pennsylvania (FCA) is the organization that owns and operates Camp Onas. It is overseen by a board of directors whose members generally serve a minimum of two, two-year terms. Most board members are Friends (Quakers), who belong to local Quaker congregations (Bucks Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends).
The members of the FCA Board of Directors have varied connections to the larger Onas community: Some are former campers and staff, others are parents of former or current campers. And some members serve because they have an interest in our work, our approach to social and emotional learning, or the ways in which we incorporate Quaker practice into our programs. What unites them all is their love for Camp Onas.
If you’d like to know more about the FCA Board of Directors, or have an interest in serving on the Board or one of its committees, please visit our website for more information.
