What to ask when reading with your kids...

Narrative Questions

  • Who is telling this story? (point of view)

  • What is the problem that this character is trying to solve?

  • How do the characters see the problem differently?

  • What has happened so far?

  • Why do you think the character said that?

  • What might happen now?

  • Were you surprised here? Why?

  • What do you think will happen next?

Informational Text Questions

  • What do you think the author is trying to tell us?

  • Why did the author choose this word?

  • What facts has the author given us so far?

  • What was the reason for the author saying this?

  • Is the author expressing an opinion about the topic? What do you think it is?

  • Do you think the author is making a good argument? Why or why not?

  • How does this topic connect to other topics we have been studying lately?

  • How important is this information?
