I am very excited to be working with your children as they learn new things this year. In class, we will be using the Wilson Reading System to help your students become fluent readers and writers. The Wilson Reading System presents the language system of English in a systematic, sequential, and cumulative manner over the course of 12 Steps, or units. Each Step is broken down into substeps that focus on specific topics. Your student will be completing two Wilson Reading System lessons a week. Each lesson covers word study, spelling, writing, fluency, and comprehension. If you would like more information about the Wilson Reading System, please let me know and I can direct you.

In addition to the Wilson reading system, we will be focusing on improving our writing skills. This year, we will be covering the following topics:

• Parts of speech
• Sentence structure
• Paragraph structure
• Brainstorming ideas
• The writing process (step up to writing)
• Different types of writing: narrative, informative, and opinion
