Happy Friday Room 18 Families!
Thank you for taking a moment to read about what your student did this week in fifth grade, as well as some important information about what’s coming next month.
📚ELA: We began Unit 5 this week: Technology’s Impact on Society. This week, students read two poems from the industrial age and they began to think about how technology & the inventions of new machines have impacted our society over time. Students brainstormed topics/opinions they have in regards to technology, and began to research their topic for their upcoming essays. We also focused heavily on theme and making inferences this week. The students participated in many games & activities to practice including a matching game, Who/What Am I? game, Kahoot! and a scavenger hunt.
🧪Science: This week, students continued to work in their science fair groups to prepare for experiments coming up. The students finished up learning about Earth & Sun with learning about climate change. They are creating a slideshow to demonstrate what they have learned.
*Students should bring in any items they signed up to bring for science experiments on Monday* Please check in with your students about this!
FabLab: The students made foil structures and took advantage of the beautiful weather to test out playing with shadows
🌎Social Science: We are still reading about and studying explorers and different trade routes from the 15th to the 17th century.
📏Math:
Students began Module 4: Multiplying and Dividing fractions this week. This week, we completed Topics A & B. Students will begin Topic C next week.
*Khan Academy math is directly related to the Eureka modules. This is assigned to students via GoogleClassroom and they can watch videos and do practice problems for every topic we cover (it is organized by unit and topic). This is a fantastic resource for students who need extra practice or clarification!!
This Week’s Assessments:
Module 4 (Topic A quiz)
Spelling test (noun suffixes: -ology, -ant, -er, -ery)
IAB (practice for state testing)- making inferences, reading for information
