C4C3 Grant: Part 1 .webm

C4C3 Grant Recipient!

In October, I applied for a grant called Comics for Community, Compassion, and Culture (abbreviated C4C3). This grant is provided primarily through two businesses: Comics Dungeon of Seattle and Corner Comics of Kirkland Washington. Both businesses donate 100% of their profits to impact the community. On April 5, I received the grant!

Shokookai of Portland

Book & Origami Donation!

On Friday, November 22nd, Liberty Middle School received a generous book donation from Shokookai of Portland. Shokookai, also known as the Japanese Business Association of Portland, is committed to promoting interests in Japanese language and culture through various programs and activities that the organization offers.

Engaging Readers Grant

Part of equipping readers is ensuring access to engaging, diverse texts. In Spring 2019, Mrs. Rivas applied for the Engaging Readers grant. The books were delivered in Fall 2019 and were greeted with much enthusiasm!

Why read?

Here's what some authors

have to say on the subject...

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn't carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.” ~Stephen King, American author, 1947-present, It

"Books can be dangerous. The best ones should be labeled, 'This could change your life.'" ~Helen Exley, South African Children's Author, 1943-present

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” ~ Neil Gaiman, British author, 1960-present, Coraline

“It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.” ~Oscar Wilde, Irish playwright & poet 1854-1900,The Picture of Dorian Gray

“Once you have read a book you care about, some part of it is always with you.” ~Louis L'Amour, American author, 1908-1988, The First Fast Draw

Mrs. Rivas, Liberty Librarian, was told to choose a favorite book. You can see how that turned out!

Who is Mrs. Rivas?

As Liberty Middle School's Teacher-Librarian and Reading Interventionist, the first thing I'll tell you is that this is my dream job. Helping students find books they enjoy, greeting newcomers and making them feel welcome, and teaching students the nuance of literature are all passions of mine.

I came to Liberty by way of the elementary classroom. In my seven years as an elementary teacher, I taught Title 1, first grade, and fourth grade. As a fourth grade teacher, my classroom library was so extensive that other teachers sent their students to borrow books. When the Reading Interventionist and Librarian position opened at Liberty, I jumped at the opportunity.

My job at Liberty is three-fold:

Through each aspect of my position, I want to equip and engage students. My contact information is at the bottom of each page. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need support.
