Your student’s teacher is the most valuable resource for gathering information about what is happening in class. They work with your student each day and can speak to their ability, work ethic, and academic strengths and weaknesses. They know their content being taught, the progression of the class, and their specific grading policies. Since they are in class teaching, e-mail is probably the best way to reach out initially to learn more about what might be happening.
Teacher’s email addresses are linked in Skyward and on the following staff directory link on the CHS website.
Students and families have seperate Skyward accounts which allow access to detailed grade reports and notifications (homework, classwork, test, project, etc.), student schedule, attendance and also teachers’ email addresses. Once logged in, simply click on the letter grade to view each assignment grade and any teacher notes.
If you do not have a parent account already, this link will allow you to get set-up.
Staying on top of your student’s grades can make a big difference in knowing how to best support them. This short YouTube video will walk you through how to access and use the gradebook.
Attendance is necessary to be successful at CHS. For each day a student misses, there are six classes and six different lessons they have missed. It is the student's responsibility to connect with all six teachers to create a plan to make-up any work missed. The best plan of action is to email teachers about the absence ASAP and connect in person the day they return to school to create an action plan. Parents must excuse and provide a valid reason for any absences.
Student Support Time (SST) takes place between 2nd and 3rd period every day, except on half days. This time can be used for studying, starting homework, receiving support from a teacher, or participating in clubs. Teachers may also require students who are failing their class to meet with them during SST.
The Learning Center is available to support all students. It is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except on Early Release Wednesdays. Support staff are available to provide clarification or re-teaching of concepts, assistance with homework and classwork, test-taking strategies, and organizational support.
Activity Bus on Tuesdays and Thursdays:
Students can stay after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for additional support in the Learning Center. An activity bus departs from campus at 4:10 p.m. on those days.
*Students MUST schedule in advance to use the activity bus. Please see Mrs. Reed in the 700 Administration Office to reserve your seat.
Outside Tutoring:
At times families also consider outside academic support through tutoring locations or personal tutors. Connecting with the subject area teacher might be a great first step to see if they have any recommendations for peer tutors or successful programs in our area. You can also find peer tutoring times in the Learning Center.
Planner System:
With six classes it is important that students work to find a planning organizational system that works for them to keep track of homework, classwork, test and project deadlines. When it comes to planners there is no “one size fits all” but here are some starter ideas for consideration:
Simple Planner: allows for daily assignments to be input
“At A Glance” Planner: allows for mapping out short term and long term projects
Organization Binders: allows for planning and work to be filed in one place
MyStudyLife or MyHomework App: an online/phone app that allows for students to input schedule and assignments
Online Study Tools & Games:
Playing online games with course vocabulary can be helpful for memorization. Here are some different sites that offer fun games for students:
