The SBR committee is elected annually. It represents the interests of postgraduates within college, organises events throughout the year, and strives to make college a welcoming place for every SBR member.
Hello! I’m currently a second year PhD student in Chemistry where I work on plastic recycling and upcycling using microbes. Ross and I are looking forward to representing the postgrad community’s interests in college and advocating for increased transparency about cost increases and other changes, increasing collaborations with other colleges, and generally ensuring that the SBR community continues to thrive! Outside of the SBR and academics, I am on the St. John’s/King’s football team, I’m involved in the 2025 SJC Mayball, and I feature on a podcast called “If You Were In Charge”. Please feel free to contact me about anything mentioned above as well as with any other concerns you would like to raise with college or ideas you have for the SBR!

Hi, I’m Ross, a third-year PhD student researching carbon storage at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Flows. Together with Soleh and Audrey, our role is to lead the SBR committee and advocate for postgraduate students within the College. We aim to cultivate a welcoming postgrad community that has something to offer for everyone and to ensure that postgrads are fairly represented in College decision-making. We are always keen to hear from you if you have any questions, suggestions, or want to get involved with the SBR!
Please also get in touch with me if you have any concerns relating to Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion and LGBTQ+ representation in the College (as the role of EDI officer is currently vacant).

I am Audrey, a second-year PhD student in English from Hong Kong. My research is about Ernest Hemingway and the Spanish visual arts. As the Vice-President of the SBR, I love bringing together postgraduates from different disciplines together and building a well-rounded international academic community. I organise International swaps with Pavia, Trinity College Dublin, and nations in Uppsala, which I hope you are all enthusiastic about! I also work closely with the Co-Presidents to represent your voices to the College and support your needs.

Hi I'm Chang, a 5th year medical student, I like travelling, learning how to swim, and I'm the secretary of the SBR. You will get occasional email from me. Most likely to find me in the college cafe when I am back in Cambridge from placement.

Hi! I’m Simon, a second-year PhD student in Physics, working on ultracold quantum gases. In my free time, I love to read in libraries and occasionally paint or write stories. If you happen to spot me, most likely in the Buttery (or even the College Bar), feel free to talk to me about anything. As a Welfare Officer, my goal is to make your journey here as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I am here to support you in accessing a wide range of welfare resources provided by the college and the university, and to organize workshops and events to maximize your wellbeing. Whether you have questions about stress management, mental health support or any other welfare-related topic, please do not hesitate to reach out. In addition, I'm available 24/7 for confidential conversations. You can reach me via email (see below), and in urgent circumstances, feel free to contact me at +44 7405369586. Your welfare is our priority, and we're here to support you every step of the way.

As a second-year PhD student in Physics, I understand the challenges of postgraduate life. That’s why I’m committed to organising social events that offer a chance to unwind, connect, and recharge. From creative workshops to themed parties, my goal is to foster a supportive community, enhance wellbeing, and bring moments of joy and balance to the postgraduate experience.

Alexander is allegedly social enough to be one of the many social secretaries and to organise the internal (and Oxford) swaps. He is a third-year PhD student in Biotechnology and will talk you to death about artificial DNA if you're not careful. He is also a big fan of spreadsheets, being friendly, arriving 5min early to everything, and is intolerant of unread emails which is probably why it was suggested he do this job. Alexander likes Cambridge but will tell anyone that he thinks it would be better with a metre and a half of snow every winter and some hills which is how you know he's from the northern half of North America. Please say hi and he'll happily try to be helpful. Usually he doesn't bite.

Hi! My name is Davide, and I am a first-year PhD student in Cancer Biology. As the SBR Environment Officer at St John's College, I work closely with the college to promote and implement green policies, aiming to reduce environmental impact and integrate sustainable practices into college operations and activities. This includes organizing events that encourage St John's students to upcycle, reuse, and explore new ways to minimize our environmental footprint.

I am a first year PhD student in the Department of Zoology. When I'm not sequencing insect genomes, I like to spend my time outdoors hiking, foraging or gardening. As Academic Officer, I am responsible for organising the SBR's Grad Talks and Graduate Research Symposium, where postgraduate students are given the opportunity to share the research they are doing with their peers. I also represent the SBR on the College's Working Library Committee, which is concerned with matters related to the use of library space, equipment and collections. If you are interested in talking at one of the Grad Talks during Lent or Michaelmas Term, at our Symposium in March, or have concerns you would like me to raise regarding the College Library, please get in touch.

Associate committee memberships are designed to promote involvement in the SBR for those of you who want to make maximum impact on the postgraduate committee without the 12-month commitment required to be a committee member. The important things to know about associate committee memberships are:
ZERO commitment! Associate memberships are not time-limited, so you can join for as little or as long as you want. We hope this will be particularly exciting for Masters students, who we know can’t serve on committee for a full year.
ZERO responsibility! There are no expectations for minimum involvement to be an associate committee member. Associates will instead be added to working groups for things they are interested in, and will be invited to volunteer for whatever tasks need doing, and to contribute ideas for growing grad life in John’s. Do as much or as little as you like, when you have the time!
MAXIMUM impact! Grad life at John’s is made what it is by our vibrant and exciting community getting involved at any level. We want as many people to get involved with the committee as we can, to not only help run our programme of events and socials, but to foster our communities and friendships in college. Meet new people, do something really meaningful for the college community, take ownership of your SBR, and get a snazzy title to add to your CV.
Apply here for the current academic year.
