I serve as Professor and Director of the A.K. Choudhury School of Information Technology, University of Calcutta, and as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at IIT Kharagpur and Adjunct Professor of IIIT Delhi. My research and teaching are centered on Artificial Intelligence and Computational Intelligence, structured around two primary research branches. The first branch focuses on Medical Image Analysis and AI-driven Clinical Decision Support, emphasizing feature engineering and representation learning alongside Computer Vision–based models for disease detection, segmentation, and prognosis from multi-modal medical imaging data such as MRI, CT, and X-ray. The second branch addresses AI-enabled VLSI design automation, reconfigurable and energy-efficient computing architectures, and Cyber-Physical Systems, where learning-based methods support intelligent system modeling, optimization, reliability, and real-time decision-making. Complementing these thrusts, I actively pursue Quantum Computing as an emerging research direction, with particular emphasis on Quantum Electronic Design Automation (Quantum EDA) and quantum algorithms, aiming to bridge classical AI methodologies with next-generation quantum computing paradigms.
I earned my M.Tech. (2001) and Ph.D. (2010) degrees from the University of Calcutta, with my doctoral research conducted in collaboration with the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the School of Engineering, Princeton University, USA (2011–2012). I previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Calcutta (2016–2019) and bring nearly two decades of experience in engineering education, research, and academic leadership. My academic contributions have been recognized through several prestigious honors, including the DST BOYSCAST Fellowship, INSA Visiting Faculty Fellowship, JSPS Invitation Research Award (Japan), Erasmus Mundus Leaders Award, Hamied Visiting Professorship at the University of Cambridge, Siksha Ratna Award from the Government of West Bengal, and the IBM Quantum Researchers Access Award. I am a Fellow of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology and a Fellow of COMSYS.
I have received and led multiple competitive research grants from national and international agencies such as DST, MeitY, DRDO, DAE, UGC, TCS, Intel India, and AWS, covering areas including Embedded Systems, VLSI Design, Quantum Computing, Computer Vision, Cybersecurity, and IoT. My scholarly output includes over 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications, six patents, and three copyrights, and I have successfully supervised 24 Ph.D. scholars to completion. I currently serve as Associate Editor of Elsevier’s Computers and Electrical Engineering, Series Editor of Springer Transactions on Computer Systems and Networks, and Series Editor of the Springer Book Series on Water Informatics. I also contribute extensively to the professional community as a Senior Member of IEEE and ACM, ACM Distinguished Speaker, Distinguished Visitor of the IEEE Computer Society, Vice President of the Data Science Society, and Vice Chairman of the CSI Kolkata Chapter.
