The Tesco Bank Mobile Banking App reflects the core brand values; Simple, Honest and Human.
The Mobile Banking App looks and feels every inch like a Tesco product, and the user interface is fast, responsive and intuitive.
This is the first app release, version 1.0, for iOS and Android mobile phones.
The app was designed in the context of customer research, user testing, operational data analysis and market trends.
On the 9th of June 2013, the Tesco Bank Mobile Banking App was launched for iOS and Android devices.
On the first day of the launch, the app already had over two and a half thousand users. By the end of the first week, there were 21,447 Tesco Bank app users.
There were 51,080 sessions lasting an average of 2:24 minutes.
Most of these users were within the UK, but people were using the app in the USA, Spain, Germany, Greece, France, Ireland and many more countries worldwide.
The carousel is the first screen displayed after login and is a quick way for customers to see their balance, available funds and navigate the app.
The carousel's simplicity and low cognitive load allow the customer to choose the account they have to complete the mission they began, e.g. paying a Credit Card bill, transferring money to a savings account or paying a bill.
The action panels are the primary form of navigation in the App.
They contain the relevant functions for the account type displayed on the Carousel. These are the customer's main access points to all their account needs.
This has been specifically designed for each operating system.
The iOS app’s action panel appears in a box upon tapping the action items, whereas the Android app’s action panel flows from the action item button in the bottom corner of the carousel screen.
At the time, these patterns were common for iOS 6 and Android Kitkat.
Customers are shown their recent transactions and can scroll down to keep requesting their previous transactions for as long as their account has been active. Credit Card customers are limited to viewing the last 90 days of transactions.
Tapping on any transaction brings up a detailed view of the transaction that replicates all the information available in Online Banking and is then scrollable by the user by clicking the previous and next buttons.
Whilst viewing the transaction screen, the user can search through their list by clicking the search icon.
The text-based search allows you to look through any data in your transaction information and filter the results as you type.
Users also have the option of using the sort function to view their transactions. They can sort them by date, alphabetically, income and outgoing, and by the amount moved.
Customers can use the app to pay their credit card bill with any UK debit card. They can select the total balance, minimum payment or another amount.
Each time a payment is made, they enter the CVV of the paying debit card and the 3D secure authentication mechanism of the issuing bank.
Customers can view their regular and future dated payments in a calendar to make it easier to see their money in a monthly and daily snapshot.
The total income and outgoings are displayed as bars at the top of the screen, allowing the customer to see their account activity over a month at a glance.
Other features of the app include:
Tutorials instruct the user how a new or undiscovered feature will work.
There is an FAQs / Help and Support documentation in every process flow or user journey explaining terminology or how to do something.
The Save Now feature is a gamified way of moving funds from your chosen current account into your savings account.
The ATM finder is the carousel left-most swipe option to help you find a Tesco Bank ATM for cash withdrawals.

The Tesco Bank Mobile Banking App in the Google Play Store is rated as 4.1 stars and has 216 reviews set at 5 stars as of the 8th of August 2013.
Google Play Store allows the ability to reply to customer reviews. We have been able to inform customers of resolved issues and updates and many have amended their rating and updated their comments.
The App Store rating is at a 4.5 star rating and about 75% of the reviews have been set at 5 stars as of the 8th of August 2013.
Unfortunately at that time, we couldn't reply to App Store reviews but by monitoring the few negative reviews on the app store and making sure that these problems are reported we can add new items to our backlog to keep our customer experience our first priority.
