ABOUT ME
Mrs. Lori Mortland
This will be my 21st year with Calhoun 40, my fifth at the Junior High as the English/ Language Arts teacher. I taught English at CHS from 2002-2018 and worked with school yearbook staffs around IL as an Educational Consultant and Sales Rep 2018-2022.
My education includes a Bachelor's degree in English Education and Communication from SIUE as well as a Master's Degree in Instructional Strategies from Rockford College.
Three things I believe:
Learning should be authentic and fun. Always.
A love of reading only comes with time to read and choice of materials.
Listening and asking questions are the most important skills a person can have.
My family and I live in Batchtown with our many pets. I graduated from CHS and have lived in Calhoun County for almost 30 years and love so much about this community. It's truly a special place that I'm honored to call home.
Parents: Here's what you can expect in ELA...
We will read, write & talk in class every day.
You should see your student reading at home regularly. The expectation is 20 minutes per night M-F.
Much of our work will be done together in class or during our supervised writer's workshops. We will practice writing, improve our skills, and explore techniques writers use.
Writing assignments will be submitted as 'best drafts' on due dates and can be revised until the end of the quarter for an improved grade.
If your student is unhappy with their grade, revisions are the best way to make a change. Extra credit will not be available.
