Select a short story from the list of texts below:
"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce
"The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe
"Thank you, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes
"A Dark Brown Dog" by Stephen Crane
"The Boarded Window" by Ambrose Bierce
"A Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe
"FDA faces pressure to act nationwide on red dye in food" by Allison Aubrey
"Can the Tupac Shakur murder trial salvage any justice from a 27-year-old case?" by Sheldon Pearce
"Miles Morales and Peter Parker pack an emotional punch in 'Marvel's Spider-Man 2'" by Jamal Michel
Take notes on the FIVE THINGS worksheet WHILE YOU ARE READING.
Complete this in-depth analysis to earn your ELA 1 Critial Reading Competencies. This will most likely require a conversation with an English teacher to fully complete.
It's time to WRITE YOUR OWN SHORT STORY! Of course, it should be well planned and thought out, so don't (necessarily) jump directly into a draft!
BEAR IN MIND that the only Rated Tasks (AKA assignments that get you grades) are steps 7 and 8! If you don't NEED to brainstorm, create a plot diagram, or self-assess... THEN DON'T.
BRAINSTORM your story by quickly jotting down ideas, fleshing out a scene, experimenting, free writing, or whatever you need to do to get something on paper!
Get your head in the right place to plot out this story by considering, very briefly, your TOPIC, AUDIENCE, and PURPOSE.
Create a PLOT DIAGRAM to map out your story, keep theme in mind, and have some kind of a plan before you start writing.
Write a ROUGH DRAFT on a new Google Doc (sorry, no link! YOU GOT THIS!).
Consider adding figurative and sensory language in the HOW TO ADD DETAIL assignment (then, I can rate ELA 5 HIGHER; you will have fewer REVISIONS).
Self-Assess your draft using the ELA 5 Continuum.
Rate a peer's story on the ELA 5 Continuum and then have a quick conversation about it (Writer's Workshop) to earn your ELA 6 Discussion competencies (you'll need the Feedback Form, Workshop Notes, and Reflection forms!
Submit your final draft! Wait patiently for your awesome ratings!
Revise (if necessary)!
Have a coke and a smile.
