Portfolio Requirements

In order to complete your Ascent portfolio, you must score at least an 8 on:

• 2 Critical Reads (ELA.1)

• 2 Visual Aids (ELA.2)

• 2 Informative Essays (ELA.4)

• 2 Discussions (ELA.6)

• 1 Research Project (ELA.7)

Paths to Success

To fulfill these portfolio requirements, you can either choose to:

1. Use the assignments/content within this course and following the step-by-step instructions on the next pages (click "Get Started," below). This means doing the following:

   • Ascent A

     1. Choose a topic and read a passage about it.

        • OPTIONAL: Discuss this topic and your passage with a small group of others who chose the same/similar topic.

     2. Write (informative essay) about that topic, using both evidence from the passage you read and experiences you've had throughout your life to support your analysis of that topic.

     3. Create a visual aid to deepen your analysis of your chosen topic.

        • OPTIONAL: Present this visual aid to an audience to complete ONE of your four required speeches.
   • Ascent B

     1. Choose a topic to research in-depth.

     2. Read and analyze three passages about that topic.

        • OPTIONAL: Discuss this topic and your findings with a small group of others who chose the same/similar topic.

     3. Write (informative essay) about that topic, using evidence from ALL THREE passages you read and experiences you've had throughout your life to support your analysis of that topic.

     4. Create a visual aid to deepen your analysis of your chosen topic.

        • OPTIONAL: Present this visual aid to an audience to complete ONE of your four required speeches.

2. Use assignments/content from another course you are currently taking (e.g. Biology, History, Art...), and use the ELA Resources site to help you meet the ELA competencies you're missing from your Competency Dashboard within Slate.
