CBE stands for Competency Based Education. A competency is a skill that you can get better at. So, CBE is learning based on skills.
At Canyon Springs, learning is student centered. That's right, YOU control your learning! This means that learning:
Is Personalized to your needs
Is Competency (skill) based
Can happen anywhere and anytime
Is Constantly happening
How is this different than what you have already experienced?
It was time based: You had one semester to cram everything in and, if you didn't learn in time, you failed!
The teacher controlled your learning.
You could fail classes and tank your GPA.
The teacher magically kept track of your learning and gave you a percent.
You had to do whatever the teacher assigned.
You had no voice or choice in how you showed your learning
Learning only happened in the classroom and, if you weren't there, you couldn't learn.
Learning Based: You learn at your own pace. If you need more than a semester, you can do that! If you finish early, you get to move onto the next class!
You control your learning!
There's no failing here. You can work until you have a higher grade.
You are able to track your own learning and progress.
You can develop assignments with your teacher that best fit your learning needs
You can choose how and what you want to learn.
We have self-paced Studios and you can learn anywhere and anytime.
Now that you have seen the differences, it's time to reflect on how this might help you succeed as a student at Canyon.
