The Sony Pictures Media Arts Program (SPMAP) is a free after-school animation program offered through a partnership between the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the CalArts Community Arts Partnership, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and the Los Angeles Public Library. This class explores topics such as the principles of animation, animation history, comics, storyboarding, story development, character design, world building, stop motion, video creation, and much more! SPMAP is open for students ages 13-18 who have expressed an interest in art. All supplies are provided.
The SPMAP program will take place from September 26, 2026 - December 12, 2026 and January 23, 2027 - June 05, 2027. Our culminating celebration will be Saturday, June 12, 2027. Breaks in between sessions coincide with CalArts academic calendar.
Each of our 3 class sites follow a different schedule. Please choose a site that is close to where you live.
Please apply by Friday, September 12, 2026 at the latest. Enrollment will be confirmed by Friday, September 18, 2026. Due to the popularity of these classes, some applicants may be placed on a waitlist. You will receive detailed class information once your registration is confirmed.
