Part 1: Observing Birds Using Your Senses

  1. In this activity, you will observe birds from inside or outside your home. It could be at your school, near your home, at a park, or from your window.

  1. Think for a moment: What does it mean to “observe” something? What senses are you using when you observe?

  1. Now, go to the place you chose to observe birds. Take your science notebook with you.

  1. Take a seat or stand in that location for about 5 minutes. Write down observations in your notebook.

    • How many birds do you see? Are they all the same kind of bird?

    • If you don’t see birds, can you hear them?

    • What do they sound like?

    • What other sounds do you hear?

  1. Optional: If you see birds, stay in the same location, or move to another spot.

Focus on one bird at a time and write down or sketch observations in your notebook.

    • What is it doing?

    • What makes it so unique?

    • How is it different from other birds you’ve seen?

    • Can you see the beak? What do you think it might eat? Make a prediction.
