Community change-makers work to make their neighborhoods a better place for plants, animals and humans to live.
... and scientific sketching is a tool used by community change-makers to share ideas for new community spaces. Give it a try!
PART 1.
Visit an outdoor space in your community with a pencil and paper.
Sit down and relax!
Sketch what you observe. Are there any plants or trees? Do you notice any animals or people? Is it sunny or shady? Are there any sounds or smells? Remember to add labels to your sketch!
PART 2.
Now imagine what this space might be like with MORE nature.
Make a new sketch that shows what you are imagining. Are there more trees? More animals? Are the colors different? Does it sound, smell or feel different in your new space? Remember to add labels to your new sketch!
Do you think you, your family, your neighbors would enjoy being in your imagined space? Share your thoughts and both of your sketches with a friend, a teacher, or a family member.

Sketching the same thing over the course of several days or weeks will create a useful record for analysis. A few examples:
Seeds germinating and growing into a plant
Decomposition in action (e.g. an apple core)
Shadows changing over the course of a day
Terrariums growing and changing over time

In this lesson, students use sketching in a field study that explores patterns of leaves in a shady environment vs. a sunny environment. In what ways are the colors the same or different?

seed - A small packet that contains a baby plant and food to help it grow. When a seed gets water, warmth and light, the baby plant pushes out of the seed and starts to grow into a big plant like the one that first made the seed.
