Pre-Activity: Social Story to help Students know what to expect on a field trip
Social stories help young people know what to expect and how to act in a new environment or social situation. The social story below helps students learn about their upcoming field trip. Some students and their families may have never taken a trip to a museum like the Academy. To help them know what to expect, to aid your class in transisitions, or to alleviate anxiety of a new place, you may use the social story below.
Download the presentation here so you can adjust it fit your specific trip plans.

Pre-Activity: Design Your Own Exhibit
This activity can be done in class, or as a homework assignment.
OPTION A - AT SCHOOL:
Imagine that you are making a museum exhibit of your classroom— something to show to others. Observe all the things in your classroom: furniture, school supplies, artwork, etc.
What items would you show to tell the story of your class? What might you add to the exhibit so that visitors might better understand the story? Written descriptions? A video? Other ideas?
Jot down your thoughts and/or discuss with a partner or as a whole class.
Now draw the exhibit.
We'd love to see your exhibits! therockprogram@calacademy.org
OPTION B - AT HOME:
Imagine that you are making a museum exhibit of a room in your home — something to show to others. Think about all the things in your room: furniture, your belongings, pictures, etc.
What items would you show to tell the story of YOU? What might you add to the exhibit so that visitors might better understand the story of you? Written descriptions? A video? Other ideas?
Jot down your thoughts and/or discuss with a classmate or family member.
Now draw the exhibit.
