Join us to celebrate our precious planet and discuss how each of us can take responsibility for its care. This presentation will highlight the unique aspects of the Academy's home, California, and our scientists' efforts to help nature thrive for generations to come.
Teachers can find optional extension activities that are designed to be self-directed by the students or used as class group work and maybe built upon by the teacher if they desire.
This program lasts approximately 25 minutes, and is taught by a team of professional educators, and is broadcast to multiple classes at the same time via YouTube Live.
The program also works well for classes who meet asynchronously because the link for the recording will be shared.
This program is designed for grades 2-3, but all are welcome.
Select the time that works best for your student(s):
9:45am PST
12:30pm PST
A week before the session, registered parties will receive an email containing the unique YouTube Live destination for the broadcast. If you registered on behalf of multiple classes, forward this along to your buddy teachers.
We highly recommend testing—in advance of the program date—whether the device you plan to use can access YouTube Live. If you can see our Live Penguin Cam, you should also be able to watch other Academy livestreams.
Sorry! The Academy cannot control your district’s security settings.
If you or your students cannot access the Students tab above, you must contact your IT department to whitelist this website.
If you or your students’ district devices cannot access YouTube Live or YouTube videos, you can instead play the embedded Recording, which we will post within 48 hours of the broadcast.
Our programs are designed so that students can participate asynchronously.
If you have questions or need us to resend the email (check your junk folder first!), please contact us at distancelearning@calacademy.org. We recommend adding that email address to your contacts to help ensure our messages are accepted by your district's email domain.
2-LS4-1 Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.
Disciplinary Core Ideas
Biodiversity and Humans
LS4.D There are many different kinds of living things in any area, and they exist in different places on land and in water.
LS2D: Social Interactions and Group Behavior
Being part of a group helps animals obtain food, defend themselves, and cope with changes. Groups may serve different functions and vary dramatically in size.
LS2.C: Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning, and Resilience
When the environment changes in ways that affect a place’s physical characteristics, temp, or availability of resources, some organisms survive and reproduce and some move to new locations, yet others move into the transformed environment and some die.
Crosscutting Concepts
Cause and Effect
Cause and effect relationships are routinely identified and used to explain change.
Distance Learning is open to all K-8 students wherever they are set-up to engage in remote learning —be that in a classroom, at home, in a learning pod, or at a community learning hub. Interested in other livestreams for your class this year? Visit the Distance Learning website.
