Bias is having a preference of one idea over another. Based on where they're from someone might have a bias towards one sports team over another. (Like someone from New York rooting for the Buffalo Bills versus someone from Pennsylvania who prefers the Steelers!)
Bias in News and Media can appear in many ways. A lot of the time when we talk about sources having "bias", it refers to the source having political bias. Political bias is when a journalist, publication, or other source has a bias, or preference over one political ideology over another. Media bias can affect the way we consume our news, the sources we choose, and the way we share our news.
Avoiding biased sources is difficult, but there are plenty of sources that are fairly unbiased, as shown in the Ad Fontes Media Bias Chart. Sources like the Associated Press, PBS, and Reuters try to provide unbiased news reporting.
Being able to recognize when a source is showing its bias is far more important. That can help you make decisions about the information you're consuming.
