With effective use of immersion strategies, authentic resources as well as hands-on learning activities, students have the best chance possible to begin speaking in Chinese and loving it at an early age. In this presentation, the presenter will share the strategies and resources used in order to encourage students to speak target language on day one. Finally, a unit that exemplifies the application of these strategies will be shared.
The presentation will include step by step of how to adapt the Responsive Classroom Morning Meeting and Closing Circle structures to an immersion early childhood classroom to increase students' language input and output, build up a strong classroom community and gradually release classroom responsibilities to the children. Early childhood teachers will be able to learn concrete examples to guide and help the students become independent learners. Songs and activities will be shared in English and Chinese so that all early childhood education teachers could use them in their classrooms immediately.
Distance Learning has been a new pedagogical approach during the pandemic situation. However, there is no doubt that it has been challenging for students at their young age. It is especially crucial for Early Years teachers to be able to keep young children engaged and promote their enthusiasm towards Chinese learning in a virtual format. Participants will be provided with a variety of concrete activities that are designed to strengthen young children’s Chinese language skills through synchronous/asynchronous and mixed-age/non-mixed age settings.
Why do we teach young children about race, diverse family structure, president election, disability..etc? How do we talk about it in an age-appropriate way? What kind of teaching strategies and learning materials do we have to support children’s learning in both content and language? In this session, teachers from CAIS preschool will provide practical strategies, including teaching guidelines, instructions and materials, for integrating issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion into the Chinese immersion preschool classroom.
Oftentimes, teachers may experience various challenges of inquiry-based learning, especially for those who teach Chinese language in the early childhood settings. This workshop offers a platform for early childhood educators to share their potential challenges as well as exchange ideas and effective strategies for inquiry-based teaching through presentation and small group discussions. Participants will reflect on their own teaching, gain new insights of inquiry-based learning, and develop positive and engaging experiences for their young learners!
Supporting students to express themselves naturally and freely through the interpersonal mode of speaking is still a critical need in the field. Our interactive online game is set in a virtual city where students practice vocabulary and have unscripted conversations with each other to solve daily life "quests" using their target language. As proficiency in speaking leads to proficiency in reading, we also offer a companion online leveled library.
The audience will learn how to promote students’ reading comprehension in both settings(virtual and in-person).
The process of “I do, we do, you do”, and learn what we do specifically with students in “you do” part.
How we implement guided reading: how to set it up, the procedure and the strategies we use.
Two Early Years teachers from Silicon Valley International School will present to you their studies in the mixed age classrooms of Preschoolers and Pre-Kindergarteners, focusing on children’s literacy development. Teacher Ying will share her approaches on assisting children to develop a memory and a passion of learning Chinese characters and phrases. She also includes a list of resources for teacher’s references. Teacher Wang will share methods of guiding children to develop their early literacy skills and scaffolding them to create their own stories. She will inspire you with various ideas on how to help children understand the concepts of books, how to facilitate open discussions with children, and how to promote their literacy development in the story making process.
We have learned that student voice and choice helps to shape their learning experience by encouraging students to share their opinions, beliefs, perspectives, and culture backgrounds. However, in the immersion setting, the second language ability may limit students to showcase their choice and voice. In this session, we will discuss how art can be used as a powerful tool to open up the choices and allow more space for their voices.
