I believe that truly effective directors, administrators, and educators facilitate and empower students, faculty, and community stakeholders rather than merely transmit knowledge. Successful education professionals work together to help students, and each other, learn how to study and grow through inquiry and constructive, inquiry-based education. Students and people, in general, are eager and inquisitive by nature and with organized guidance and diverse opportunities they will naturally seek out and discover knowledge, thus equipping them with relevant and meaningful understanding. As an effective leader, it is my responsibility to inspire students, faculty, and community stakeholders in the pursuit of knowledge while recognizing when individual situations and motivations may require differentiated instruction and/or a design thinking change process. It is also my responsibility to impart deep learning of principles and not just rote memorization – critical analysis and creative problem solving instead of mere knowledge of facts. Students and faculty should not just have technical skills in a specific subject matter, but should also know how they are all built upon each other within that subject matter and how they integrate across other disciplines. Education needs to be engaged with enthusiasm and a desire to evaluate, hypothesize, and construct. As a balanced director, administrator, and educator, I show support for all students and faculty as I demonstrate an interest in both their professional and their personal growth, cultivate their independence to develop and sustain high expectations for themselves, and encourage them to continually seek out new questions and new answers as lifelong, global learners.

Student to Teacher / Teacher to Student / Teacher to Parents Communications & Interactions,

presented by Karyn Scrimgeour

I am a Grade 1 Teacher in my second year with the CAG family. I have a strong learning support background with a special emphasis in emotional and behavioral support, as well as having undertaken Family & Community Engagement CPD with HarvardX. Prior to becoming a teacher, I was an Area Training and Development Manager for the UK’s largest Social Housing Network and have extensive Customer Service training and team building experience. I hope to link my prior knowledge in the field, with some anecdotal narratives and engaging activities to take a look at how we can create a sense of community in a time of struggle and uncertainty. I will be using the following site (VIA Survey) and it would be useful if participants look at it before the event and if possible complete a free strengths and virtues surve (quick, simple, and very informative).

Gratitude & Closing Thoughts,

presented by Sonia Figueroa

I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. It was always my desire, my dream. After a personal experience with my grade 3 teacher, I realized how much teachers can impact the success and learning process of their students. In 1979, I became a teacher believing that I could make that difference. I have 41 years of experience in teaching at the Elementary and University levels. Also, I am an author of Estudios Sociales and Reading elementary textbooks. I am an elementary teacher with a Bachelor's degree in History and Social Studies and a Master's degree in General Education. In 2018, I became an a Spanish NSRF®-certified International Facilitator. During my experience as a teacher, I served in different roles as a Spanish teacher from PreK to Grade 5, Lead Teacher, Elementary Spanish Department Head, Technology Teacher, and currently as a Lower School Assistant Principal. My life is blessed with a wonderful family. My husband is also an educator and my two marvelous sons graduated from CAG. I believe teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change.

Closing Words: “Friendship Soup,"

presented by Krystal Cordero

As an international educator, I began my career in New York with an aspiration to teach abroad and explore different opportunities with Dual Language Learners. After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Education, I started as a classroom teacher at The American School of Guatemala. I developed a passion for language, putting students at the center of instruction and incorporating our school’s MIssion and Vision into my daily teachings. Eventually, that path led to my current Lower School Assistant Principal position. I have learned an abundance of knowledge throughout all my experiences and I am eager to lead from within, continue to ask questions and take new steps.
