Week of 3/23-3/27

ELA: This week, we will continue Unit 3- Shutting Out the Sky. Students will continue reading about immigrants' immigration experience to the United States in the time period of 1880-1924. We will also be working on writing in response to reading focus questions.

Lexia Core5 units are being taken for a grade. 16 units each week unless told otherwise by Ms. Hanson!

Homework:

"Refugee" Common Lit passage due Friday, March 27!

Lexia Core5: Students are required to complete 16 units each week unless told otherwise by Ms. Hanson. They can work on this at home AND at school in the mornings, and often during the day. If they are working on this at home, they need to use a computer/laptop. To use it on a phone or tablet, they need to download the app.

Makeup work: If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to check with me to get what they missed while they were out. This includes homework! Students can find their makeup work in the "While You Were Out" section in my classroom.

Lexia Core5 "units" are taken as a grade each week. Core5 is divided into 21 levels. Each level has 5 activities, and each activity is divided into units. Each activity has between 6-20 units. A unit is a set of questions and may cover a specific sub-skill of the reading skill covered in the activity. Units increase in difficulty and/or complexity as the student works through each activity. Each unit should take about 4-6 minutes to complete if students are giving the lesson their full attention.

In 5th grade, students are required to complete at least 16 units each week, unless they have a different target. They work on this throughout the day at school, but they could also work on units at home.

ELA grading:

Classwork/Tests: weighted 75% of grade

This can include any work completed independently or with a partner/group, tests, quizzes, or exit tickets.

Participation: weighted 15% of grade

This can include Lexia Core5, guided activities with teacher, discussions, etc.

Homework: weighted 10% of grade

This can include Reading Logs and any other homework assignments.

Grading scale:

100-90-- A

89-80-- B

79-70-- C

69-60-- D

59-0-- F

If you see a "0x" for a grade, that means the student was absent and they may turn in their work. If you see just a "0," they either did not turn in their work or made a zero.
