Overview
Cabrillo College offers several field geology and coastal oceanography courses, which are 1-unit weekend or 4-day courses intended to give students experience with field skills and a chance to spend time together getting to know a spectacular place in California.
In spring 2026 we'll be offering GEOL-27, which is a weekend field class that goes to Pinnacles National Park and includes camping, hiking, and a lot of fun. This class fills quickly!
New this year is GEOL-28, which shows up in the Fall 2025 catalog, but was offered during the break summer and fall semesters! We met on the Aptos campus Monday 8/11 for 2 hours of orientation and then traveled to UC Berkeley Hastings Natural History Reservation and Point Lobos Tuesday 8/12 at 10am through Thursday 8/14 at 2pm.
Instructor: Lisa Gilbert
I am the Chair of the Geology, Oceanography, and Environmental Science Departments. I graduated from Aptos High and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences and Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Oceanography. My speciality is marine geology. My passion is helping students discover more in themselves than they realized was there, especially in how they relate to the natural world.
