6 Simple Steps
1. Gather Required Documents
Note: You can start, and usually finish, your FAFSA form without referring to any documents. Most people are able to import their federal tax information directly into the form. So, don't worry about finding your tax return before you start the FAFSA form.
Social Security number (and alien registration number if you are not a citizen).
Federal tax returns from two years prior (for the 2026–27 form, use your 2024 tax data).
Records of untaxed income, child support, and current bank or asset balances.
Contributor info (emails, SSNs, and birth dates for parents or spouses if applicable). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
2. Create Your Account
Go to StudentAid.gov and set up your account username and password, known as an FSA ID (click "Create an Account" below).
Any parents or spouses who need to sign as "contributors" must also create their own StudentAid.gov accounts. [1, 2, 3, 4]
3. Start the Application
Log in with your FSA ID and select Start New Form as the student.
4. Provide Consent for IRS Data
Give approval for the system to automatically import your tax information directly from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Declining this consent makes you ineligible for federal student aid. [1, 2]
5. Complete Sections and Add Schools
Answer questions about your dependency status, demographics, and finances.
List up to 20 colleges or career schools you want to receive your information.
If dependent, invite your parent or guardian as a contributor to fill out their required portion. [1, 2, 3, 4]
6. Sign and Submit
