Our attendance goal for each pupil is 95% attendance or above. Studies have shown a direct correlation between good attendance and excellent grades. In these difficult times, it is essential that pupils keep attending registration and classes, remotely.
Pupils are expected to respond to their teachers registration question, take part in all online lessons and complete any work that has been set for them remotely.
Failure to do this will result in falling behind with work, which will in turn place more pressure on them to catch up. Keeping up with work and attending classes is also essential as teachers will be collecting evidence for grading and monitoring pupils' engagement in lessons.
Although the document below is targeted at GCSE students, the same principles and guidance relates to A'level students.
Positive Teacher Feedback
Attendance by a great deal of pupils remains high and they should be congratulated. We thank you for your commitment to your studies.
It is important for the boys to try and keep on top of their health and well-being during these trying times. Isolation, Frustration, lack of social contact etc is taking its toll on all of us, but especially on the young.
Exercise or do something that helps you relax - get out and get some air
Make a point of talking to people rather than locking yourself in your room
Some lads have not engaged at all - You will know some of them - have a word with them to try and get them engaging - there’s nothing else out there
Try and keep up to date with your work
Please take a minute to look through the Powerpoint below that delivers important messages on how to remain well.
Watch Headspace - a programme on Netflix - well worth a watch
Over the coming months, we hope to put in place a series of enrichment programmes that Yr13 students can get involved in, Covid guidelines permitting. This will be important for a number of reasons:
Develop skills and qualities
Enrich your learning experience so it is not just academic
Give you different experiences that could lead to new opportunities
Make yourself more desirable on a CV, job application form or your UCAS application for uni
I would advise as many pupils as possible to take part in something, either inside school or outside as it enhances your profile.
Our first Programme is being run by the Organisation, Sport Changes Lives.
Sport Changes Life
Gareth Maguire (CEO and Co-Founder) – Past pupil of DLS and former international basketball player.
Points raised
Six weeks online Personal Development programme
In partnership with Glentoran FC, whose players would be involved in mentoring our students.
Players involved could be Chris Gallagher (past pupil of DLS) and Patrick McClean (brother of James McClean, Republic of Ireland international)
One hour per week, on Wednesday pm, because players are available.
Likely to be 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Doesn’t have to be based on sporting ability, more to do with students who would benefit from such a programme.
Incentives for students involved:
Clothing, e.g. hoodie
Pizza vouchers
Possibility of gym membership (Gym Co, Devenish)
One week joint session with Boys’ Model.
After Easter, subject to lockdown, the players could come into school for training sessions etc.
Further Education and Vocational Options
For those pupils who are not intending to come back to the school next year or are not sure what they are going to do, I would advise you to start investigating other options like Workforce or Belfast Met. There are also apprenticeships that are available, but the time for filling in applications for them is now.
I would advise anyone who is thinking about moving on to apply now rather than the summer.
