In 2022 the school's first Eco Council was set up. Through the eco-connections, and our Shared Ed partership with Down High School, we were selected as one of three Cluster Groups of schools (Downpatrick, Lurgan and Belfast) to pilot the EcoEd4All education. We were also linked to two schools in Galway.
This on-line learning is provided on the Alison.com platform, and was rolled out to Eco Council members. The courses cover Climate Change - The Science, Water, Biodiversity, Transport and Circular Economy and students were encouraged to access these courses to develop their understanding of environmental issues.
This year, over 25 schools across the island of Ireland are now adopting the EcoEd4All education, and in St. Patrick's, the whole of Yr 13 will be receiving this education as part of their Enrichment options.
As part of the EcoEd4All project, we were to work on a Social Action Project, which we decided to celebrate on the day of Earth Hour. We took part in a joint litter pick around Downpatrick, celebrated with a barbecue and live music, and at the start of the Earth Hour we watched from the vantage of the Gallows Hill as the lights from the local churches and government building 'went dark' for the hour.
We also petitioned Stormont to join in with this initiative, and switch the famous lights off to celebrate Earth Hour.
