Peter Atkins
Chemistry is a branch of physical science that studies the composition, structure, properties and change of matter. Chemistry includes topics such as the properties of individual atoms, how atoms form chemical bonds to create chemical compounds, the interactions of substances through intermolecular forces that give matter its general properties, and the interactions between substances through chemical reactions to form different substances.
Chemistry is sometimes called the central science because it bridges other natural sciences, including Physics, Geology and Biology.
Ms Lisa Connolly (Head of Science and Chemistry)
Mrs Geraldine Doherty
Mrs Lisa Longley - DA Chemistry
Ms Clancy - LHS Chemistry
Chemistry is taught by all Science teachers at KS3 and by Ms Connolly and Mrs Doherty at A-level. Practical provision is aided by Mrs Sage. The department is housed in 2 laboratories, well served by a spacious preparation laboratory. To support the teaching and learning that takes place in the classroom throughout the academic year, Chemistry students have opportunities to go on educational trips and listen to talks from various organisations. Students also have opportunities to take part in competitions such as the RSC Top of the Bench quiz or the RSC Chemistry Olympiad.

To employ the use of varied teaching and learning styles to develop a wide range of intellectual and social skills.
1. Chemistry is needed as a compulsory subject in these careers:
Medicine
Dentistry
Pharmacy
Chemical Engineering
Medical Chemistry
Oceanography Marine Chemistry
Environmental Chemistry
These are only a few of the careers that Chemistry makes possible
2. There are a wide range of other careers which actively seek out Chemistry graduates because of the skills the subject brings to them.
Chemistry students have the skills and knowledge to allow them to enter a full range of occupations associated with graduate employment
Skills like:
Working as part of a team
Analytical skills
Skills in taking knowledge and applying it to different situations
Due to this Chemistry and Chemical Engineering graduates are much sought after by companies in the field of commerce, finance and in the civil service as well as teaching.
3. Three of the top 4 highest paid professions require Chemistry
Medicine
Dentistry
Law
Chemical Engineering
