In first grade, we emphasize the LEADERS standards of behavior - Leadership, Excellence, Accountability, Discovery, Engagement, Respect, Service. We also frequently discuss safety and hold students accountable for acting in ways that keep everyone safe.
We set routines and habits for good behavior and practice them often! When students know exactly what to expect and what they should be doing, it makes it that much easier for them to do the right thing. We give positive rewards, like LEADERS tickets, to students who are going above and beyond in those LEADERS attributes. When students struggle to make a correct choice, we ask them to take a break. If the behavior continues, or it is a bigger deal like physical contact, we will email home. We ask that you speak with them about their behavior and encourage them to make the better choices that they brainstormed in their reflection.
