Lake Chatuge is actually a man-made reservoir stretching across Hiawassee Georgia into Hayesville North Carolina. Construction of Chatuge Dam was completed in 1942, then the 7,500 acre reservoir was filled with water, with the help of the Hiawassee River, and beautiful Lake Chatuge was born. When created by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the purpose of the lake was flood control, electricity production and improved navigation, but the end result has had so many more benefits. Sport fishing is popular, both in the lake and below the dam, where a concrete weir was installed to increase oxygen production in the river and attract more trout and other aquatic life to the area.
