2019-2020 C-I Bluejacket Wrestling:
Finishing Strong
“Focus on the process” has long been the mantra of coach Neil Jennissen starting his 31st year as the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejacket head wrestling coach. The 61st version of Bluejacket wrestling hopes to improve every day & finish this season strong with its’ best wrestling when it counts.
The Bluejackets will look to reload the line-up as eight seniors, one section champ and one all state wrestler finished their high school wrestling careers last year. Returning from last years’ team are four section placewinners, and seven wrestlers with a lot of varsity experience. Key leaders this year should be captains Jimmy Brown, Easton Johnson, & Logan Lindquist. Payton Doty, Romeo Nordquist, & Jacob McCabe logged at least 20 varsity matches last year & look to strengthen the team. Several other Bluejacket grapplers had varsity experience and look to muscle the 2019-2020 team to a strong finish.
Bluejacket HOF coach Neil Jennissen brings a career 587-197-3 record (7th all-time among MN wrestling coaches) into the 2019-2020 season. Helping guide this new-look batch of grapplers are a load of dedicated assistant coaches Tommy Campanaro (23rd year), Jesse Jennissen (18th year), Travis Fuhol (13th year), Ben Horn (3rd year), & Matt Henderson (1st year). Creating enthusiasm for the sport at the middle school level are Bob Nassif, Steve Tischer, Nate Nassif, & John Henderson.
2020 wrestling outlook
The Mississippi 8 conference will take a new look with power St. Michael-Albertville & always improving Buffalo leaving the format. Rejoining the conference is 6AA section runner-up Becker. Each team in the conference will get a chance to wrestle each other and the conference champion will be determined by those dual meets. Becker, Big Lake, Princeton, & St. Francis look to be the most experienced foes for the Bluejackets this season.
Section 7AAA will feature many good teams as always. Forest Lake (ranked 4th by the Guillotine) & Anoka (ranked 12th by the Guillotine) were the section finalists last year and will be strong competitors again this year. Blaine, Coon Rapids, & St. Francis should have strong line-ups once again. With a strong finish, the Bluejacket wrestling squad should be among the leaders in the conference & section.
The Bluejackets will host the 7AAA Individuals the weekend of February 21st-22nd a week after the section tournament in Andover. The Bluejackets will also host Big Lake (Dec. 13th), Princeton (Dec. 19th), Bluejacket Invite, Alumni day (Jan. 4th), Bluejacket Quad (Jan. 17th), Bluejacket Duals (Jan. 18th), Becker (Jan. 31st), and Andover, Senior Night (Feb. 6th).
