I primarily use technology as a support system. I use programs such as Code.org, IXL, Mystery Science and Discovery Ed. I really appreciate technology for writing and research projects. I am concerned about the amount of screen time we are exposing kids to in conjunction with the screen time they are no doubt experiencing at home. Technology should enhance education not become a stand-in for education.

Technology is important in the classroom because most students are already using technology in one form or another. It is the purpose of education to prepare students to become functioning members of society. While it is true that many students are more adapt to using technology than many adults, all students do not have the same access to devices. A classroom is typically a safe place to explore and use the tools of the work force. There are many ways to adapt technology use across the curriculum, throughout ability levels, and disabilities. Technology can be used to reteach, practice, enrich the curriculum, and in learning strategies. Technology offers an exciting and different approach to teaching educational standards.

Technology in the classroom is an essential tool for an educator to have proper communication with parents and students. It is essential for engagement with the students because the students are already using it anyway. It is important to be able to use social media to stay connected with parents and students in real time. It is important to use the different tools available to make logarithms quicker, to make writing simpler, and to make everything easier for the kids. This way the teacher will be able to cover more standards rather than using the traditional way of teaching.

Some people think it's important because it's a new thing that students will learn and know, and we have to keep relevant. I don't think that's it. Rather, school is about life, and technology is changing our lives (mostly for the better!) and when we know how to use technology correctly we actually change lives. We make them better. We learn how to make our own lives better, and those of others too. Consider what happens when you put someone on penpals.com and they develop a friendship--or when you show them an awesome youtube video about space and their imagination goes wild! You've given them far more than just academic knowledge, you've given them passion and knowledge and excitement, and the joy of life!
