Another busy fortnight at BPS with lots of exciting learning that has taken place. A big well done to our Year 6 Sports Crew who enjoyed helping Active Surrey put on a Physifun day for some Year 3 and 4s. We hosted this event at BPS with several local schools joining in.
Last week we welcomed our CEO, Mr Harris, and two other Headteachers from EEEA to BPS, who carried out a Learning Review to quality assure our school. We are delighted that the children and the team's hard work and dedication is paying off as we received some positive praise. Our visitors were highly impressed with our children's positive attitudes, their impeccable conduct around school and their strong behaviour for learning demonstrated over the two days. It was wonderful hearing our children talk so positively and enthusiastically about their experiences of being part of our wonderful school. Mr Harris described them as 'proud, happy and respected'.
We enjoyed welcoming Key Stage 2 parents in to taste food from our new Summer menu. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and we're glad they enjoyed the delicious food our chef, Nadine, and her team prepared for them and our children.
It was very exciting to see the Fire Brigade arrive with their fire engine last week, where they spoke to Rainbows class about keeping safe. See pictures below of their fun visit.
Year 2 showcased some wonderful learning this morning in their assembly. See information below.
It's been great to see so many children logging on to Doodle Maths and Reading Plus at home. Many children have received certificates for making some terrific progress using these online resources at home. We have several children who are on a 100-day-streak. A terrific well done also to 4 pupils who are on a 250-day, 280-day and over 400-day streak! Well done for logging on everyday for a few minutes of maths learning at home!
Thank you to the Year 6 families who attended the Year 6 SATs meeting recently. We hope you found this useful.
Next week our Year 6 children undertake their end of key stage SATs. We are very impressed with the children's level of dedication whilst the staff have been working hard behind the scenes to prepare them for next week. The staff have organised a fun afternoon of treats for them on Friday 12th May to say a big well done to them for all their hard work and positive mindsets! A big thanks to the families who have also been doing extra revision at home to help the children with their preparations.
Please don't forget to sign up your child for this year's swimming lessons here so Mrs Scott can finalise this year's swimming lists.
The children enjoyed a King's Coronation themed lunch today.
Enjoy celebrating this wonderful event this weekend as King Charles's Coronation takes place.
Happy bank holiday to all our families.

ReCeption Fire Brigade Visit
As part of our 'People who help us' topic for Summer term 1, Rainbows class were lucky to have a visit from Surrey Fire and Rescue Services. The crew explained to us what we would do in case of an emergency at home or in school, showed us their special fire protective uniform and told us the importance of our smoke/fire alarms. They told us that if you do not have a smoke alarm, the fire service will fit them in your house for free! The children knew lots of important information about fire, keeping safe, and they even knew to dial '999' if they needed help. The crew also told us that they also do lots of other jobs too, such as rescuing animals, managing large group events, and educating children in schools across Surrey.
After our classroom talk, we were very lucky to be able to sit in the fire engine and squirt the hose (even the teachers too!). This was amazing! Inside the fire engine we saw lots of special equipment including a heat camera, protective clothing, and special tools. We could hear Captain Neil's radio making noises, which is where incoming emergencies would alert the crew. Firefighter Marley showed us the inside of the fire engine and all the different controls they needed, especially the one which turned on the hose. The water blasted out super strong... luckily they had a special lever that you could push/pull to increase or decrease the pressure. The cars and car-park had a good wash! What an amazing visit and how special. We are very grateful to Firefighters Kyle, Jacob, Neil and Marley for coming and visiting Byfleet Primary School. I wonder who our next visitors will be?!
Year 2 class assembly
The children performed incredibly well in their class assembly! They all spoke articulately and expressively whilst proudly sharing their learning. The group of actors who portrayed the Tudor monarchs had us in stitches with their humour, body language and facial expressions!
The year 2 team are so incredibly proud of everyone!
Year 3 and 4 art work
Year 3 and 4 have been working hard in their art lessons adn have created som amazing art. Year 3 created felt paintings inspired by Andrea Hunter and Year 4 created sea pictures inspired by artist Anna Baboza.
Handwriting
We are having a big push on improving our children's handwriting and presentation. Our recent staff meetings have shared best practise and discussed strategies to help us improve our children's written work.
If you are able to help us out and purchase your child one of our preferred handwriting pens (Year 3 - 6), here is a link on Amazon.
We follow the Nelson Handwriting scheme.
It is important that our children write their capital letters larger than lower case letters.
We will regularly reinforce the difference between ascenders (h, l, k) which are tall letters, and descenders (g, j, p, y) which sit below the line. We still have many children writing descenders above the line so this is a big focus for us.
Please can you reinforce this at home. All children from Year 2 will be expected to start joining their handwriting so that they are fluent, neat handwriters by the time they start Year 3.
Inclusion
A HUGE THANK YOU to the Friends of Byfleet, who through their fundraising events raise money to benefit our school and pupils. They recently bought these books for us, the books are known as 'Hi-Lo' books, and are specifically written for pupils who may be reluctant readers, or for pupils whose reading age may be lower than their actual age. The books are aimed at older readers and are 'Hi' interest for them, to engage them and promote a love of reading, while being at a level they can access so they gain confidence. These books will be available for children to read through a borrowing system being set up in the Inclusion Office.
The six week course ‘Celebrating and Inspiring Children Who Do it Differently’ is running at Byfleet this half term. It is led by two Barnardo’s staff members and focuses on building each child’s self-esteem, discussing the positives about them as individuals, and working through a ‘tool box’ personal to them which they can take home at the end of the course. We have eighteen children from across KS1 and KS2 participating in this intervention this half term!
SAVE THE DATE! Our next Inclusion Coffee Morning will be on Thursday May 18th, 8.50-9.50 am (in the school hall). These events always get really positive feedback from the parents who attend, and are a great way to meet other parents and find out more about Inclusion at Byfleet! It would be great to see some new faces at this one, so please do come along.

We will be celebrating 'Diversity week' during the week of 22nd May 2023. Each class will be learning about a different country and participating in a variety of activities.

Little Wandle Phonics
What is an alien word?
Children in Year 1 have been introduced to 'alien words'. These are also known as 'nonsense words'. Alien words are words that are phonically decodable but are not actual words with an associated meaning e.g. brip, snorb, gaid and drell. The children have to use their phonic knowledge to sound out the words and then blend the sounds together to read them. It is important that the children say the word they hear, rather than try to turn it into a real word.
Alien words help children learn good phonics skills. Children need to be able to decode and blend words they do not know, since they will continue to encounter new words for the rest of their reading life.
