EPIC play at BPS

We have come up with a memorable name for our new playground provision...

       E P I C    (Enriching Play in Children)

We have loved watching the children be creative with the plethora of resources the play team have made available to them - old chairs, bed sheets, old plastic pipes, tyres and logs. We've seen some incredible dens and team building, which is lovely to see. It's a pleasure to see our children engage creatively in collaboration with their friends on the playground.

Our Friends of Byfleet are going to fundraise to help improve our EPIC provision, which kicks off with a BREAK THE RULES mufti day on a special day this year.... 29th February! After all, a leap year only comes around every 4 years!

We are currently looking at ways of improving the provision for our children at playtime. We are looking at building in opportunities for more purposeful play which foster imagination and creativity by enhancing the resources and spaces which we have available. We are on the hunt for lots and lots of different things including:

-Small world play (action figures, small characters etc)                                   -Dressing up clothes

-Bed sheets/large blankets/duvet covers/old tents                                            -Lengths of rope

-Pallets (no cracks or splits)                                                                                       -Plastic crates (supermarket type)

- Planks of wood/ drain pipes/ logs

If you have any of the above and you are willing to donate them to the school please leave them at the front office.

Year 2 Roman WOW Day

To consolidate thelearning for our ‘Layers of London’ history topic learning about the Romans, we had a Roman themed day in Year Two. It was a lot of fun and we all dressed up to bring our learning to life.  We enjoyed so many activities including making Roman pottery, writing and designing a two-page spread to write down our knowledge about the Romans and making Roman honey and oat biscuits.  We also learnt about Roman numerals and made clocks and created pop up colosseum cards.

our amazing concert from students at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Cobham

On the 21st February, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming students from the Yehudi Menuhin School in Cobham into our school. They showcased their amazing talents playing instruments such as the violin, piano, viola and cello.  The students performed music inspired by the 4 seasons, which absolutely took our breath away. To hear music performed so powerfully and passionately from children as young as 12 years old, really did amaze us all (especially the children!).
If you put your mind to something, you truly can do anything. I hope the children really are inspired.Thank you to the brilliant students & teachers who came along to perform a truly amazing show. We hope to welcome you back soon!

YeaR 3 Learning

During year 3's science topic we have been looking at plants. During this topic we have learnt about the different parts of the plant, we dissected a plant to help us with this, we put celery into different coloured water to see what happened, we were shocked to see the water had travelled up the celery.  Did you know plants use the sun and water absorbed from the soil to create a sugar to help them grow? This process is called photosynthesis.

NHS Careers Day

As a parent or carer, we’d like you to encourage and support your child’s entry into the Step into the NHS primary schools competition so they can learn about the wide range of career opportunities in the NHS.

The NHS are inviting Key Stage 2 pupils (ages 7 – 11) across England to submit a creative entry to showcase the variety of job roles in the NHS – by creating a card, video, poem or even a song - by 22 March 2024.

Why we need you!

We understand that families at home have a huge influence over a child’s ambitions and what they think about jobs and the world of work. Your support at home can contribute significantly to your child’s education and aspirations.

Your child will have started thinking about their entry and their teacher would have shared the relevant resources with them, but there are lots of ways families can help.

How do I support my child’s entry?

1.    Visit the Step into the NHS website (search ‘Step into the NHS’) to help them explore over 350 jobs. You can both:

o   Explore a ‘day in the life’ of different careers with our careers A-Z

o   Take our fun quiz to learn about the NHS

o   Watch our new career videos to hear from people in the NHS

o   Take the careers quiz on the website which suggests NHS careers based on their skills and interests

2.   Use the conversation starters below if you cannot access the website.

3.   Encourage your child to be creative!

o   How can they best show the variety of NHS roles? What creative things have they seen recently – maybe online, on TV or out and about?

o   What are they best at? Drawing, making videos, playing games, writing poems? Can they incorporate these skills into their entry?

o   Their entry can be made using materials around the home – paper, colouring pens, news clippings or paints

o   If your child chooses to film a video, they might need your help. Try to film in a space with lots of light, like near a window or a lamp.

4.   How can they show in their entry that anyone can do any NHS job, regardless of gender? Have they challenged the myth that only men and women can do certain jobs in the NHS?

5.   Help your child send their entry to their teacher before 30 April 2024.

Learning Poetry off By Heart

We've loved every minute of listening to our children recite poems off by heart, as part of our English curriculum. We've ensured that the range of poetry comes from different eras to expose the children to contemporary and modern poets.

Ask your child at home to share their lovely poetry with you...

Well done to Year 6 for having the highest February attendance (again!). Enjoy sitting on the benches during assembly!

A special shout out to Year 1!

I mentioned in our January newsletter that we were concerned about Reception and Year 1 as their attendance was low. Excellent work Year 1 for coming second in February!

Reception's attendance remains a concern!

Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive) , they will be liable to receive a penalty notice.

Currently the amount payable under a penalty notice is £60.00 per parent/carer per child if paid within 21 days. Thereafter the amount increases to £120.00 if paid between 21 and 28 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority will consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court. Please note that penalty notices are issued per parent/carer per child so a family of two parents and two children will receive 4 penalty notices.

Please view our Attendance Policy here for further information.
