17 Year 6s attended Indoor Athletics this week and came ninth. Miss Partridge was blown away by their excellent team spirit and behaviour. Well done Year 6s. This week they also received their new Year 6 hoodies, boasting vibrant purples and pastel greens around school! Thank you to the Friends of Byfleet for organising these for the children.
Miss Oliver organised an excellent trip for 25 children across the school to attend a performance with live music from an orchestra at GLive in Guildford. The children came back with excellent reviews, and for some, it was the first time they had been to a theatre so this was a real treat!
It was great to see some parents attend the SENDCo Coffee Afternoon Workshop this week too. Read more below.
This week we celebrated Chinese New Year at BPS. I recently asked for the parents' feedback regarding religious festivals and traditions and this was one of your great suggestions. A big thank you to Mrs Xue (Meg's mum in Reception), who came in and delivered an interesting assembly all about Chinese New Year. See more below.
The children in all classes thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Coram Scarf Lifebus this week at BPS to learn how the importance of being a kind friend and they also learnt about the importance of keeping their body healthy and clean. See more below.
The children performed their termly school assembly to show case their Poetry Recital Off-By-Heart today. We are so proud of how quickly the children have been able to learn and recite several poems off-by-heart. Do ask your child to share their poems with you at home....
We have seen an increase in the number of pupils being collected late at the end of the school day. This increases the need for staff members to provide out of hours childcare. Children are dismissed from school at 15:15pm. Children not collected within 10 minutes of the end of the school day, will be liable for late collection fee of £10, as per our updated Attendance Policy. This will be effective from Monday, 24th February. Charging arrangements are in place to avoid the need for members of staff to provide out of hours childcare.
Year 4's Bikeability has been rescheduled for Monday 3rd February. Please park bikes inside the Year 1 gate to keep them safe.
Monday is your child's Tray Day from 3.15pm - 4pm. Everyone is welcome to visit their child's classroom and look through their books to celebrate the wonderful progress they are making in their learning.
Next week we celebrate Children's Mental Health Week. Don't forget to wear a SCARF to school on Friday 7th February for our PSHE SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) Day.
We are looking for an additional Parent Governor to join our Byfleet Primary School LAC (Local Advisory Committee). If you are interested in working strategically with the Headteacher and Governors and can spare a couple of hours each half term, then please reach out to Mrs Scott at info@byfleet.surrey.sch.uk to tender your interest.
If you are interested in hiring our school hall, a classroom, our outdoor hive or swimming pool (summer term only for the pool) for an event you may have in mind, don't hesitate to speak to Mrs Scott in the office who will be able to share our pricing details.

Learning about different cultures and traditions is important to us...
We were thrilled to welcome Mrs Yuzhen Xue to our class on Wednesday. She captivated us with fascinating traditions and stories about Chinese New Year.
What a fantastic week of learning and discovery!
The Surrey Wildlife Trust delivered a fantastic session at BPS - all about birds!
We learned about different types of birds, their habitats and migration patterns. Year 4 even had the opportunity to make bird food to take home and place on branches around the school.
This week the LIFE Bus Education team Scarf Life Bus visited BPS. The 'bus' is an interactive tent that the children from each year group visit to enhance their PSHE learning. This week, Reception had two amazing special visitors!
For the Reception class, they were taken on an exciting journey to learn all about the human body with Harold the Giraffe.
Year 6 took part in Sportshall Athletics, organised by Active Surrey, at Guildford Spectrum on Wednesday 29th January.
The children were their usual brilliant selves, showing determination and enthusiasm the whole morning. It was great to see them working as a team, cheering each other along and celebrating any and all wins. Shout out to Elsie who proved herself to be a phenonemal javelin-thrower and to Zach for his incredible off-the-wall turns in the relays.
We are incredibly proud of them and they should all be pleased with taking part in a 'Higher' event!
It was my absolute pleasure to take a group of children from Year 1-6 on a trip to GLIVE in Guildford to experience an orchestra concert. The coach was exciting but the children's faces lit up when they first heard the live musical instruments playing together. Our children bopped, danced and clapped along to the classical orchestra. We were complimented on our 'Byfleet Manners' and I could not be prouder or more grateful to have experienced this first with our lovely children.
The Friends of Byfleet are in desperate need of a new outdoor shed as the current one is no longer suitable. If there are any parents/carers who are able to organise the donation of a new shed for the Friends to store their items i.e. preloved uniform etc. Please contact the school office by popping in or sending an email to info@byfleet.surrey.sch.uk.

Byfleet Primary school was lucky enough to have been entered into the National Science Quiz Championship and General Knowledge Quiz Championship 24/25!
The science quiz was open to years 5 and 6 and we had Fin, Kurt, Dalia and Darren representing us. They did amazingly well and we reached the semi finals! Sadly that was where our journey ended but a big well done to the 4 of them!
The General Knowledge quiz was open to years 3-6. The following children took part: Eva (Year 3), Eleanor (Year 4), Hari (Year 5) and Jack (Year 6). They also did really well! We are currently waiting to hear if we made it through to the semi finals so fingers crossed!
Once again a big well done to all of those who took part, we are very proud of you all!
Firstly a thank you to those who came to our Parent Coffee Afternoon where we discussed Resilience, Zones of Regulation and Emotion Coaching. Hopefully you all took away some top tips of how to use these evidence based resources in your homes to support your children when it comes to facing challenging times.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
I hope that next time we see a few more faces, even if those are online!

Movement Breaks
Throughout the day teachers plan movement breaks for their classes. Movement breaks are key to breaking up learning and helping the brain engage in the learning task(s).
Movement breaks help children and young people to self-regulate and assists attention by re-grouping and re-focussing. A short break which gets the whole body moving and increases breathing rate is thought to be the most effective as it increases levels of oxygen in the bloodstream and can help to improve concentration and focus.
Every class teacher uses a range of different strategies for brain breaks or movement breaks. Movement or brain breaks come in different forms. Alerting, calming organising and grounding. These could be seated or standing movements. Some don't even involve moving your body!
Alerting activities including activities such as running, climbing, playing on a swing, skipping, dancing or shoulder shrugs. These can sometimes be beneficial to children to 'wake them up' but these can also 'wear children out' .
Calming organising activities include balance activities, lining objects up, completing a puzzle, yoga or simon says. These types of activities can re-engage minds after something challenging as they are familiar and deemed 'easy' and 'relaxing'.
Further activities linked to grounding can also be done, such as: deep pressure, weighted items liek weighted blankets, finger breathing or star breathing, humming or stretching or swaying. Again these activities can calm or can excite children.
Following from these types of activities, children then transition into their learning.
Teachers choose carefully which activities they use for their classes and teachers will use their judgment when best to use movement breaks for the whole class. Some children may require additional movement or specific sensory breaks or class jobs to aid them and help to meet their needs.
Please try book your child's routine appointments, like the dentist and optometrists, out of school hours or during the school holidays. We have had 9 routine dentist appointments in January and 3 optometrist. We are working hard to meet out 96% target so appreciate your support with this.
Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), they will be liable to receive a penalty notice. The issue of a Penalty Notice will also be actioned where a pupil has incurred 10 or more unauthorised sessions during the preceding 10 school weeks. These also included 'lates' after the register has closed.
**Changes to the National framework for Penalty Notices came into force for Penalty Notice Fines on 19th August 2024**
First offence within a 3 year rolling period will incur a charge of £80 per parent, per child if paid within 21 days, Increasing to £160 per parent, per child if paid within 28 days.
Second offence within a 3 year rolling period will incur a flat rate of £160 per parent, per child if paid within 28 days.
