Dear Parents/Carers

  • Our whole school target for attendance is 97% and unfortunately we are below this at %. We currently have 74 (32%) children who have 100% attendance so far.

  • Attendance:

Reception: 95.92% Year 1: 93.87% Year 2: 95.69% Year3: 95.24%

Year 4: 96.34% Year 5 Indigo: 92.04% Year 5 Blue: 97.09% Year 6: 95.01%

  • A big congratulations to Miss Lloyd who spent her half term break qualifying to become a swimming lifeguard. It's great to know that we now have our own qualified staff to support our children's summer swimming lessons.

  • Well done to the following children for scoring top scores in our Year 5/6 Science Quiz:

Monty and Lola (Year 6) Amelia R and Kjaer (Year 5)

These children will go through to the national round of Science Quiz Club in an online competition at the end of November. Good luck! Thanks to Miss Mills for running this club.

  • Christmas Carol Concert: We will be hosting 4 separate Christmas carol concert sessions for you to come along to and have a sing-song with your child(ren) on Monday 6th December (9.05 - 10.05pm & 1.45 - 2.45pm) and Tuesday 7th December (1.45-2.45pm & 6-7pm). Two tickets per family based on first come, first serve basis. Should there be any tickets spare, we will keep you informed.

Christmas Carol Concert Tickets

The tickets are free but there is an opportunity for you to make a donation on the site, donations will be split between the Friends of Byfleet Primary School and The Matthew Hackney Foundation.

We look forward to welcoming you to these events.

  • Request for Absence: A reminder that if parents/carers take their children out of school without authorisation for 5 or more days (which do not need to be consecutive), they will be liable to receive a penalty notice. Currently the amount payable under a penalty notice is £60 per parent/carer per child if paid within 21 days. Thereafter the amount increases to £120 per child, per parent/carer, if paid within 21 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority (Surrey) will consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court.

Please note that this decision is not influenced by the Headteacher or any member of staff - it is a national arrangement and overseen by Surrey LA.

  • Our recent Parents' Evenings have now been completed - we hope you enjoyed hearing about the progress your child is making in school. We are very proud of the improvements the children are making.

  • Start of the Day: The morning staggered start for the school day is 8.35 - 8.45. Only Reception age children enter from 8.30.

Just a reminder that Year 5/6 come into school from 8.35 first (before we allow Year 1-4 in) but may arrive up to 8.45 to ensure they are on time. The parents of children in Year 1 - 4 are welcome to remain in their cars and wait until 8.35 (or arrive between 8.35-8.45), before we welcome the children in from this time onwards. We are conscious that the weather may be getting colder (or be wet) and we don't wish for you to stand around in the cold or rain - many thanks.

Spelling Bee 2021!

Spelling Bee Competition for 2021!

As part of our continued efforts to promote and improve the standard of spelling across the school, we will launch our spelling competition, which we hope will be an annual event. Every child in Y1-6 has the chance to learn a list of spellings and earn house points and prizes in the process. We are hoping this will be a fun and motivating way to encourage learning spellings and to celebrate the achievements of the children.

Competition Timeline

Week beginning 15th November - Preliminary round!

Class teachers from Years 1 - 6 will test their classes with a sample of words from the word list for their year group. Each word will be read aloud for the children to spell on paper. The children will be able to win house points for words spelt correctly. Each year group will then enter their top speller from each house, four spellers in total, into the semi-final.

Week beginning 22th November - Semi-final!

All semi-finalists will be able to earn house points for correctly spelt words. They will spell words from their year group lists. Words will be spelt out loud - a whiteboard and pen will be provided.

Week beginning 29th November - Second preliminary round!

Class teachers will once again test their class in the same way as the previous preliminary round, using different words from the list. This will be another chance for all children to earn house points and, as before, the top spellers will be entered into the next round. The finalists will be chosen from this second preliminary round and so these may be different children from the semi-final!

Week beginning 6th December - Final

This will take place in the same way as the semi-final round and the winners will be announced!

What words should my child be learning?

Please check Google Classroom, the spelling lists have been uploaded. These words have been taken from the National Curriculum statutory word lists.

How can I help my child?

Spellings can be learnt in limitless ways, although traditionally spellings are learnt by memorising them using a "Look, Cover, Say, Write and Check" approach. While this is effective, it isn't always the best or the most fun way to learn. We encourage you to also think creatively - the more fun it is, the more spellings your child is likely to learn. Here are a few suggestions for ways that you could make learning spellings fun, engaging and memorable:

  • First, help your child to practise reading the words. It is very hard to spell a word you can't read confidently

  • Use the words on the list to write a rhyme, song, poem or rap

  • Assign letters or word chunks to sound, music or rhythm

  • Write tricky words on post-it notes and display them in visible places around your home: on the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, next to light switches, on TV remotes, on laptops/tables, PlayStation controllers - wherever your child is most likely to see them

  • Draw the words in bubble writing or in colourful patterns

  • Write out each word and then trace over it again and again. This will help with muscle memory when writing the spellings down.

  • Make posters or pictures of your word for display

  • Don't forget to practise spelling the words out loud!

  • This is not an exhaustive list so do come up with your own fun ways to learn them too

Book Buddies

Let's celebrate Homework projects

The new homework matrices are available on Google Classroom. We look forward to seeing the wonderful work your children complete at home.

Antibullying & Odd Socks

NSPCC SPeak out - stay safe

Monday 15th November is Odd Socks Day!

Odd Socks Day is part of Anti-Bullying week. To celebrate that we are all unique, we ask that the children wear odd socks to school. Odd socks day is important because it sends a message to children that they should be allowed to be themselves free from bullying and helps us celebrate Anti-Bullying Week in a fun and positive way.

Andy and the Odd Socks are supporting the Anti-Bullying Alliance to help bring Odd Socks Day to life this year. You could listen to the song they have recorded especially for Anti-Bullying Week named One Kind Word.

NSPCC Assemblies - Speak Out, Stay Safe

This week we held NSPCC assemblies, and talked about children’s rights, including the right of all children to speak out and stay safe. This year the assemblies were held online, and the children met a range of famous faces (Ant and Dec!), NSPCC volunteers and of course, the NSPCC mascot, Buddy. Buddy helped deliver the Speak Out, Stay Safe messages in a fun and interactive way. Children discussed that they should speak out to an adult they trust if they feel worried about anything.

Drama Workshops over christmas

Stagecoach Woking will be running their Christmas Workshop from Hoe Valley School in Woking from the 20th-23rd of December 2021. This is for children aged 4-17 years old with students working in age appropriate groups.

The week will include excerpts from Elf and many more classic shows and Christmas films. Each day will be different, working on songs, dances and scenes which will be filmed and sent out for all the family and friends to enjoy. The week will be upbeat, educational and invigorating giving the children a wonderful seasonal experience.

Students will work in small, age appropriate bubbles and we will be following Covid-19 government guidelines. For further details or to book, please visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/woking or email woking@stagecoach.co.uk or call us on 07957 825641.

Class Assemblies

It's been a while since we've been able to invite you into school. We can't wait to invite you back into school to see your child's class assembly. We will continue to reduce the number of children we have together in the hall so will only move to 'whole school' assemblies once it is safe to do so. In the meanwhile, each class will host their class assembly to their parents and one or two other classes in the school hall. These will start at 8.55 - 9.20ish so please join us in the school hall on the day that your child's class assembly has been scheduled.

Help for parents

Parenting Smart (Place2Be)

The children's mental health charity, Place2Be, has launched a new website aimed at helping parents with typical situations they can find themselves in with their children.

Advice can be found on over forty topics including:

  • Understanding sibling rivalry

  • My child is lying, what does it mean, what should I do?

  • My child has trouble going to sleep

  • My child says ‘I hate you!’

  • Cultural identity: who am I?

The Parenting Smart website can found here: https://parentingsmart.place2be.org.uk/

The National Sleep Helpline (The Sleep Charity)

  • Do you struggle to fall asleep?

  • Do you feel tired?

  • Do you have a child who won’t sleep in their own bed?

One in four children in the UK are not getting enough sleep and this has an impact on their behaviour and ability to learn, as well as their physical health.

If you feel that your child has difficulties with getting enough sleep there is a free helpline run by trained sleep advisors who can talk to young people directly, or parents (they can also talk to parents about their own sleep issues).

The helpline is open 5 nights a week, Sunday to Thursday, 7-9pm and the number is 03303 530 541.

Please see the posters for more information and for additional support and advice you can also visit the website: https://thesleepcharity.org.uk/national-sleep-helpline/

Inclusion

Inclusion Coffee Morning

SAVE THE DATE!

When: Thursday 9th of December 2021 at 9am

Where: The school hall

Who is it for: This coffee morning is for parents who have a child at Byfleet to learn more about Inclusion at our school. It will be a great opportunity to meet our new Inclusion Lead Mrs Sharkey-Yun, who will explain the provision and support we have in place for children with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilties), and how we track and monitor their progress.

There won't be a chance to discuss your child's indivdual support and provision during the coffee morning, but if you have any additional questions you will be able to book a further appointment with Mrs Sharkey-Yun.

Emotion Coaching and Zones of Regulation

Our Staff Development Meeting this week developed our understanding of Emotion Coaching and Zones of Regulation. These are mindful and inclusive approaches to supporting children's well-being and emotional development by empowering children to recognise their own emotions and learn strategies to self regulate. At Byfleet we understand that behaviour is a means of communication and recognise that emotional times are opportunities for teaching children. We will be putting up new displays in our classrooms and teaching lessons about this over the next half term .

There is lots of useful information about both approaches on the following websites; please click on the pictures to find out more.
