As the first half term of this academic year draws to an end, we would like to thank you for your continued support. This term has been hugely successful, with many great things to celebrate.......a positive external Learning Review, Rockkidz self-esteem day, Bikeability, Dog safety visit, school disco, the highest attendance we've had since lockdown and lots of fun learning!
Thank you to the parents/carers who attended Mrs Sharkey's SEND coffee morning. Another one will be scheduled for the Spring term so look out for the date in our calendar below.
The children had a wonderful Halloween Disco last week - thank you for helping us raise valuable funds for the school.
Any parents who missed this week's parents' evenings slot, please liaise with the class teachers who will be happy to squeeze you in for an alternative slot after half term. We hope you all found the parents' evening useful and know what to work on with your children at home to help them make even more progress.
It was good to see Year 6 Bikeability teaching our Year 6s how to cycle safely on the roads and plotting their journey to our local secondary schools, in preparation for next year.
We are delighted to announce our new Parent Governor vacancy has been filled. Congratulations and thank you to Jackson's mum (Ms Gibbons) for being nominated to this valuable and strategic role, helping us to make BPS a brilliant school.
A final reminder for secondary school applications: Is your child starting SECONDARY SCHOOL next year here is the link to Surrey County Council's website to register your child for their secondary school place here.
We still have a few spaces left in Reception, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 6. Please spread the word to any new potential families who wish to join our wonderful school.
Thank you for the kind Harvest food donations that have been sent into school. We will continue collection food (see below in the newsletter) next half term. Drop off points are in the main foyer.
Reminder to all parents to please ensure that they pre-book their children's lunch via Scopay (Scopay parent help guide ). From Monday, 6th November, if a child has not ordered a hot dinner on the day, parents will be required to bring in a healthy packed lunch by 11:30am (this applies to all year groups).
A tremendous well done to all our families for ensuring our children attend school regularly. This term has had the highest attendance since lockdown, with 96.68%, which is above the national average and above our school target! It's great to see that fewer doctor and dental appointments being made during school time, which makes a huge difference.
With the conflict going on in the world, here are some helpful resources for you to use to speak to your child about war and conflict.

Art at BPS
Across the school this half term, every year group have been working hard at learning different art skills such as: perspective, collage, using clay to make sculptures, portraits and sketching.
They have looked at different artist: Banksy, Stephen Wiltshere, Heather Knight to help inspire their art.
Year 1 & Year 2 Open space
Our wonderful ELSA lead Senorã Wyatt has been busy this week creating a purposeful and fun area outside our KS1 classrooms. Take a little look at our beautiful mud kitchen, we are excited for the children to use their imaginations and create some mathematical recipes! Mud pie anyone?
After half term our tiny tables will be painted to create a beautiful colourful vibe and we are excited to use this over the coming months, rain or shine! Please ensure your children bring in their waterproof warm coats and wellies are always welcomed.
We have asked our families of Year 1 to join us in making some painted rocks over the holidays! We will use this to create maths sentences using our stuff trays to encourage learning in all environments. Please see some examples below.
Year 2 Learning
In Year 2 the children have been busy outside, learning about following and giving directions using language like: forwards, left, right and backwards.
We then used a map to write directions. This is in readiness for our walk to Byfleet Fire Station in November, as part of our topic work, 'Burning Byfleet.'
Did you know that Byfleet Fire Station was opened in 1889 so it is Victorian.
Year 5 SPY Day
This half term we have been learning about Spies and WW2. We organised a ‘Wow’ day and the children came to school dressed in spy themed clothing.
We had a great time completing a variety of 'Spy' themed activities such as creating our own secret codes, using clues around school to complete a scavenger hunt and moving to avoid obstacles around the classroom!
BPS DISCO
Oh what a night!
A huge thank you to Friends of Byfleet Primary for hosting our annual autumn disco!
The brilliant DJ Si-tunes entertained our little ones with games and spooky tunes while the older years danced the night away with adults getting involved in a dance off! Shapes were thrown all evening, sweets and hot dogs topped off a night of fun and we cannot wait to host another one soon!!
Byfleet Xmas Light Turn on
We have an exciting opportunity for our KS2 classes to take part in Byfleet's exciting Christmas Lights switch on on Thursday, 16th November!
On your Scopay accounts you will see a confirmation box to indicate if your Child will be attending the Byfleet Christmas Lights Switch On and to sing in the Choir.
We will be busy learning the songs within school, and will be accompanied by a Ukulele band during the Choir singing. How amazing does that sound!
This event is open to our KS2 pupils, however any siblings in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are also welcome to take part and sing in the choir. A Parent/Carer will need to accompany their child to the event, and stay with their child for the duration of the special event.
Timings of the event: - Arrive at 6:15pm in the village ready for the Choir and Ukulele band to begin performing at 6:30pm.
- At 7pm the lights will be turned on! The Ukulele band will continue to play festive songs until close.
Songs we will be learning are:
Jingle Bells, Walking in a Winter Wonderland, Santa Claus is coming to town, White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer.
What an exciting opportunity to showcase our singing and enjoy the Byfleet Christmas spirit!
Dog Safety Assembly
Dog Safety Assembly
The children enjoyed a 'Dog Safety Assembly', helping children understand how to approach dogs and behave around them. During the assembly children learnt how to understand a dog body language and practice safe interactions with dogs through engaging activities, including the use of large-format photographs and interactive games. We discussed situations where it may be unsafe to approach a dog, and how to read dogs' body signals whilst out and inside of the home.
Are you eligible for Universal Credit / Pupil Premium Funding?
Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools for pupils who have been registered as being entitled to Free School Meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. Schools receive this funding to support their eligible pupils and narrow the attainment gap between them and their peers.
If you are unsure if you qualify, complete the form and return it to Byfleet Primary and we will work with Surrey to check your eligibility.
Other Pupil Premiums are available to the school if parents or guardians meet the criteria.
Free School Meals can be provided to pupils if parents/guardians meet the eligibility.
We urge you to complete this form even if your child does not take a school meal.
For any queries, please contact the school office via info@byfleet.surrey.sch.uk.
Sports Crew
On Friday 6th October, our six members of Sports Crew attended training at Woking Leisure Centre. The children were able to discuss what makes a good leader and experience leading their own activities. Since then, our fantastic Sports Crew have led two warm-up activities for Year 6 and will be heading to other year groups soon to support them. Well done to our amazing Sports Crew for representing our school brilliantly at the training and continuing to show excellent respect, resilience and maturity to this role.

Christmas PRESENT SHOEBoxes
This year we are hoping to support ‘Operation Christmas Child’ by asking our families to pack a Christmas present shoebox for children, a tangible message of hope for children in the toughest of circumstances. The boxes are shipped to countries affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine and disease. We hope by doing this our children will see the importance and value of helping others.
If you feel this is something you would like to support please see the leaflet your child has brought home and follow the instructions for creating your shoebox over the half term holidays. You could even join another family in your child’s class and create a box together.
We do ask that you return the completed boxes and have followed the instructions for making the donation, no later than Monday 13th November. We will then hold a special assembly where the children can bring in their boxes. They will then be delivered to our local drop off point.
For further, more detailed information, please see the website

Little Wandle Phonics
It has been a very busy few weeks in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 and the children have been busy Little Wandl-ing.
Our Reception children are making great progress with their phonics and have been enjoying their reading sessions with Miss Vallins. Year 1 have spent the past few weeks reviewing Phase 4, and are getting ready to start Phase 5 after half term. For some children in Year 2, they have come to the end of their Little Wandle journey and will be moving onto our book banded books after the half term break.
NOVEMBER's READING CHALLENGE
Each month we are running a reading challenge!
Well done to all the children who are working hard to get BINGO! We will be collecting them in after the half term. November's bingo grid will be added to your child's reading diary when we return in November. Please encourage them to complete as many activities as possible during the month.
READING FOR PLEASURE
"Reading for pleasure gives children the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. Interestingly, reading for pleasure also improves children's well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others." -Oxford Owl
If your child enjoys reading Harry Potter, here are some other books, written by other authors, which they may like to read.
OPen The Book Assembly
Each month we are delighted welcome the Open the Book team from St Mary's Church to do an assembly based around a story from either the Old or New Testament. The team bring the stories to life with props, actions, songs and videos as well as getting the children involved. This month's assembly saw the story of Joshua bringing down the walls of Jericho.

Attendance & Punctuality
Attendance Winners:
It's been a great start to term with very few absences. Our target is 96% and I'm pleased to announce that attendance is currently 96.68% for the year.
There are currently 5 children with attendance below 90% at persistent absence, who have been sent a reminder letter.
Monthly Attendance winners:
September 98.85% Year 2
October 99.34% Year 2
We hope Year 2 enjoy sitting on the benches during assembly as their reward.
November's winning class with the highest attendance?
Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive) , they will be liable to receive a penalty notice.
Currently the amount payable under a penalty notice is £60.00 per parent/carer per child if paid within 21 days. Thereafter the amount increases to £120.00 if paid between 21 and 28 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority will consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court. Please note that penalty notices are issued per parent/carer per child so a family of two parents and two children will receive 4 penalty notices.
Please view our Attendance Policy here for further information.
Inclusion
Dyslexia Awareness
At Byfleet we learn about diversity, including thinking about neurodiversity; the unique way people's brains work. We held an assembly this week focusing on 'Dyslexia'. We learned how indivduals with dyslexia are often highly creative, curious and great at problem solving. Some children were keen to share examples of someone they knew who had dyslexia and had some of these amazing abilities. We also talked about how people with dyslexia may find some things more challenging such as remembering facts, sequencing and aspects of literacy. It was a great refelction celebrating what makes us all 'uniquely you' (this year's dyslexia awareness week theme).
For some useful guidance and information please look at the Bristish Dyslexia Association website.
The 'Nessy' website also has free books about Dyslexia that you can download (for both parents and children), as well as courses for parents and online programmes (which need a subscription). They are offering some discounts on these for the month of October. Nessy Resources for Parents.
