Children's Commissioner - The Big ambition

We teach our children about the British Value 'individual liberty' so this is a good chance to let your child have their say....

The Children's Commissioner, Dame Rachel De Souza, has launched her The Big Ambition survey, to hear from all children and young people in England aged between 6 and 18 years old. Adults can answer on behalf of a child or young person aged up to 18.

She will use this survey to take children and young people’s views to the Government.

Everything you tell me will be kept private, and you don’t have to answer any question if you don’t want to. To find out more, visit her website to complete this short survey with your child.

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. Just answer honestly!

Making it better for our Byfleet Community - have your say!

Dear Byfleet Resident / Business - Invitation

The Byfleet Residents Neighourhood Forum(BRNF) was created to produce a neighbourhood plan (BNP) to sit alongside the Woking Core Development Plan to support sensible development for our village. The plan sub-committee has been working hard for some time on a draft plan for the village, which is now ready for public consultation.  This is now your opportunity to influence the future of the Byfleet village.  The Byfleet Forum would very much welcome any views and comments from Byfleet Residents and Businesses regarding this consultation document.

You are therefore invited to come along to the Byfleet Forum stall at Byfleet Christmas Market, Byfleet Village Hall on Saturday, 2nd December - 10:30 to 15:00  to talk to members of the BRNF committee and learn more about the plan.

Additionally, for those who may wish to take some time considering a response, hard copies can be viewed at the following places:-

Byfleet Library - St Mary’s Day Centre - Byfleet Village Hall

Electronic copies of the plan are also available to view on the Byfleet Forum Website at www.byfleetforum.co.uk/theplan or scan our QR Code to take you straight to the website.  You will also find the Visions and Key Objectives of the forum on the homepage.

Andrew Weiss, Chair of Byfleet Resident’s Neighbourhood Forum, Serving Byfleet Village would love to hear from you at administrator@byfleetforum.co.uk

Year 3 Assembly

Year 3 taught us about the Stone Age in their assembly today. I can't believe the UK was once connected to Europe and was covered in ice!

They explained the Stone Age was divided into three parts and shared different artefacts that show how and where they lived, the changes they encountered and the buildings they created. Well done Year 3!

Big thanks to Miss Osborne for organising this. We know the Year 3's will enjoy their upcoming trip to Stonehenge in December.

Year 4 Butser Farm

Last Friday Year 4 had a chilly but wonderful day at Butser Ancient Farm. We were all transported back in time as we got a taste of what it would be like to live like an Anglo Saxon and a Viking house.

The children were able to explore the different houses that would have been seen in Britain from the time of the Stone Age to the Vikings as well as learning about the ancient communication of runes and how writing used to be completed with ink and quill.

The children also learnt about how we learn about the past when they took part in an archaeological dig and found everything from animals bones and ancient pottery to modern china and motorbike parts. A thoroughly enjoyable hands on day!

NSPCC Assembly

NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe. online programme

We participated in the NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe. online programme. This consists of an online assembly and supporting classroom based activities. Speak out. Stay safe. is a safeguarding programme available to all primary schools in the UK and Channel Islands. It aims to help children understand abuse in all its forms and to recognise the signs of abuse in a child friendly way. Children are taught to speak out if they are worried, either to a trusted adult or Childline.

By the end of the programme, we’re convinced children will feel empowered – knowing how they can speak out and stay safe.

Look out for our NSPCC fundraiser that takes place in February!

We look forward to supporting NSPCC for all the support and resources they provide for our BPS children as part of their Speak out. Stay safe. programme.

If you would like to know more about the Speak out. Stay safe. programme you can find information on the NSPCC website www.nspcc.org.uk/speakout

Year 5 LEGO WWii Workshop

Year 5 had an exciting Thursday morning when Jamie from Brickies came to visit! The children took part in a LEGO Stop Motion Animation School Workshop, using Lego to create scenes from D-Day.

The first task (in partners) was to plan their movie. Following on from the plan, the children then used the Lego to create their London scene. It was lovely to see the children demonstrate communication skills, delegation and time keeping, all whilst being creative and having fun!

Jamie shared with the children some of his favourite trade secrets to create a movie worthy of the big screen! At the end of the session we were given an electronic copy of all the videos which we will be sharing during our class assembly in February.

"The Lego workshop was really fun because I really enjoyed using the Lego and the Kindle." - Harrison

"It was really fun and it was a great experience to find out how to make movies! I really enjoyed it!" - Diana

Well done Year 5 - Hollywood will be calling you!

Year 6 Restart A heart

Year 6 enjoyed learning how to safely administer CPR last Monday after we were lucky enough to be visited by a volunteer from Woking Community First Responders.  The workshop taught Year 6 why it is important to have this life skill and went through 'DR ABC' in an interactive so they can use this if they ever need to (we hope not!). Year 6 practised their CPR skills on dummies and the 'Recovery Position' on each other.

Book Buddies

Book buddies are children from different classes who share a love of reading and books. To instill a love of reading, every month our children meet their Book Buddy and they enjoy a few books together. It's our favourite part of the month!

Antibullying Charter Mark

Make A Noise - Anti-bullying workshop. Our 8 anti-bullying ambassadors from year 5 took part in a workshop to kick start the anti-bullying week with a bang. During the workshop they learnt a pledge to encourage change and had a go at writing their own poems alongside musical instruments to 'Make A Noise' and be heard. They also heard from other trained young people who shared their ideas on how to tackle bullying and make sure the school environment is inclusive.

It is great to see our Year 5 Antibullying Ambassadors working so hard to make BPS a happier and safer place for all our children!

We love their #Antibullying Pledge!

Science KS2 Quiz Club National Competition

On 24th November, our Quiz Club science team competed in one of the Quiz Club National Science Heats. There were 55 teams and almost 200 children all answering a range of challenging questions across six increasingly difficult rounds.

From questions on galaxies outside our solar system to classifying dinosaurs and even nuclear fission, Ethan, Jack, Lilly and Daniel focused hard and displayed amazing teamwork.

In the end, it was announced that only the top 15 teams would go through to the semi-finals...and the Byfleet team qualified in 10th place!

Well done Ethan, Jack, Lilly and Daniel, whose personal scores all ranked within the top 60 children. Good luck for the semi-finals in January!

Attendance & Punctuality

Attendance Winners:

Our target is 96% and I'm pleased to announce that attendance is currently 96.52% for the year.

There are currently 7 children with attendance below 90% at persistent absence, who have been sent a reminder letter this week to see how we can help.

Monthly Attendance winners:

September    98.85%      Year 2

October         99.34%      Year 2

November    97.91%       Year 2

Year 2 have a hat trick for the highest attendance 3 months in a row! We hope Year 2 enjoy sitting on the benches during assembly as their reward.

Year 3 were chomping at Year 2's heels in November with 97.83% attendance! Keep going!

Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive) , they will be liable to receive a penalty notice.

Currently the amount payable under a penalty notice is £60.00 per parent/carer per child if paid within 21 days. Thereafter the amount increases to £120.00 if paid between 21 and 28 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority will consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court. Please note that penalty notices are issued per parent/carer per child so a family of two parents and two children will receive 4 penalty notices.

Please view our Attendance Policy here for further information.

Are you eligible for Universal Credit / Pupil Premium Funding?

Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools for pupils who have been registered as being entitled to Free School Meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. Schools receive this funding to support their eligible pupils and narrow the attainment gap between them and their peers.

If you are unsure if you qualify, complete the form and return it to Byfleet Primary and we will work with Surrey to check your eligibility.

Other Pupil Premiums are available to the school if parents or guardians meet the criteria.

Free School Meals can be provided to pupils if parents/guardians meet the eligibility.

We urge you to complete this form even if your child does not take a school meal.

For any queries, please contact the school office via info@byfleet.surrey.sch.uk.

We are looking to recruit a swimming coach or company that would like to work with us.

Harvest Dontations - Thank you

Thanks again for all the wonderful Harvest food donations made as part of our Harvest Festival collection. A huge thank you to Mr Lowe (Nellie Lowe Year 4's Dad) for dropping off the generous donations on behalf of the school.

Christmas TREE For the SChool

A huge thank you to Mr Habgood and Elana Habgood in Rainbow Reception Class for donating a real Christmas tree to Byfleet this year.

Elana helped her Dad pick the tree from Wisley Common.  It’s a Scot Pine tree around 7-8 years old and the reason for cutting it down is that it is an invasive species that quickly outcompetes the slower growing heathland plants such as heather.  The tree has traveled 2 miles, was cut down by hand, germinated from seed on site & by cutting it down this helps to perserve the heathland in Surrey.

It is now decorated and on display in our school hall!!

FRIENDS OF BYFLEET - CHRISTMAS RAFFLE TICKEtS

Don't forget to buy your raffle ticket to win one of our Christmas hampers.

Tickets available from outside the main office  at the end of the school day!

Thanks to our Friends of BPS for organising this!

Poppy Appeal - Money Raised

Byfleet Primary School pupils raised nearly £200 for Royal British Legion, this is amazing!!

Well done to everyone who supported this worthy cause.

It was great to see our Year 6s selling the poppies for this worthwhile appeal.

reading volunteers

Reading is a priority at BPS and we are extremely pleased and proud to have 6 reading volunteers who come into our school weekly. Each volunteer is assigned to a different class which means no class is without a reading volunteer. Three of our reading volunteers have joined us through 'Coram Beanstalk'. In a recent survey, 94% of schools said they have seen an improvement in general attitude to learning in the children receiving Coram Beanstalk's support. The other three volunteers are from the local community, including one of our governors. All our volunteers recognise the importance of reading and we appreciate them giving up their time to help our children.

If you have some free time during the week and would like to become a reading volunteer, please contact the school office. It is amazing to have 6 volunteers already however, more would be even better!

READING FOR PLEASURE

"Reading for pleasure gives children the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. Interestingly, reading for pleasure also improves children's well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others." -Oxford Owl
