exploring Autumn in reception rainbows

This term, Reception class are exploring the changes of Autumn. We made a special plan to walk around our school and spot any signs of autumn and any seasonal changes. We noticed some of our trees looked a bit bare, and then spotted lots of fallen leaves on the floor. The leaves were all different colours... red, orange, yellow and green. We discussed that leaves change colour during different seasons and fall off during autumn. How strange!

Ollie asked a super question: 'Why can't autumn trees wear coats and scarves to protect their leaves?'. What a great idea! We researched this question and found out that some people use blankets/covers, or move their smaller potted plants into greenhouses to protect them during autumn and winter. We thought this was a great idea to help keep plants safe. Super questioning Ollie!

We continued to look around our school and spotted acorns, pinecones and spikey shells around the floor. The class used brilliant describing words to talk to one another about the objects such as spikey, prickly, waxy, smooth, rough. What a great autumn hunt... I wonder what other seasonal changes we will spot over the next few weeks?

Year 3 Learning

Year three have been working incredibly hard this term. They have all been working hard on ther presentation in books, In Writing they have been concentrating on their handwriting and have written a diary entry inspired by the book UG boy genius of the stoneage. In Maths have been looking at addition using number lines, number bonds and concrete materials. The children have been excited to share their homework and we have displayed it in our classroom, it has been wonderful to hear and see the children share there facts and use them in their topic lessons . Well done to all the children for a brilliant start to Year 3!

Rockidz builds confidence at BPS!

The children had a wonderful rocking day with Rockkidz on Wednesday, learning songs about Resilience and Growth Mindset.

We would still really appreciate contribution towards this educational day as we still require over £200 to assist with funding this event.  You can do this via Scopay.

Are you eligible for Universal Credit / Pupil Premium Funding?

Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools for pupils who have been registered as being entitled to Free School Meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. Schools receive this funding to support their eligible pupils and narrow the attainment gap between them and their peers.

If you are unsure if you qualify, complete the form and return it to Byfleet Primary and we will work with Surrey to check your eligibility.

Other Pupil Premiums are available to the school if parents or guardians meet the criteria.

Free School Meals can be provided to pupils if parents/guardians meet the eligibility.

We urge you to complete this form even if your child does not take a school meal.

For any queries, please contact the school office via info@byfleet.surrey.sch.uk.

Children's Commissioner

Our country's Children's Commissioner, Dame Rachel De Souza, has launched 'The Big Ambition' survey, where she is gathering views of our children, before the General Election takes place.

She wants to hear from children and young people about their schools, communities, family life, and the wider world. I am also asking what they want for their future, their hopes, dreams, and aspirations.

This survey is for all children and young people aged 0 to 18. Children aged 6 to 18 can complete the survey themselves. For those who may need additional support or for children under six parents  and other adults can complete the survey on their behalf.

Governor Vacancy

Want to make a difference to your child's school and support the local community?

Byfleet Primary is actively seeking to recruit one School Governor.

Volunteering as a governor is a great way to contribute to your community and use your existing skills and experience to improve th lives of local children. It's also a great opportunity for you to acquire new skills. Governing bodies rely on a variety of experiences and perspectives and no prior knoledge of schools or education i reuired. Training is available for new governors and is provided free of charge.

A governor's term of office runs for 4 years and the average time commitment is approximately 10 hours per year which includes attending meetings, background reading and school visits. Meets are held 5pm - 7pm although this may vary from time to time. Governors are epected to attend all meetings.

If you are interested in becoming a Parent Governor and work alongside the Headteacher and existing Governors, please complete the Google nomination form here.

Little Wandle Phonics

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend the Little Wandle workshop yesterday morning. If you missed it and you have any questions, please speak to your class teacher or contact the office to speak to myself.

Phonics in Reception

Miss Vallins and the reception children began their Little Wandle journey to last week. Each week your child will come home with a home learning sheet which will inform you of the sounds taught during the week. Children will be coming home with book next week! #exciting!

Phonics in Year 1 & Year 2

Year 1 and Year 2 are continuing on their Little Wandle journey. Please continue to listen to your child read and sign their reading diary. Our Reading Recovery teacher, Mrs Van Sickle, will be supporting children in Key Stage 1 who need additional support with their reading.

Please continue to read this part of the newsletter as it will give you information on how you can support your child at home. Here is the  link to the parents page on the Little Wandle website.  https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/

READING FOR PLEASURE

"Reading for pleasure gives children the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. Interestingly, reading for pleasure also improves children's well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others." Oxford Owl

If your child enjoys reading books by Jacqueline Wilson, here are some other books, written by other authors, which they may like to read.

Online Safety

Last week I experienced an eye-opening and highly concerning website called OMEGLE.

We urge parents to check their child's phones regularly and have serious conversations about keeping themselves safe online.

What is Omegle? What parents need to know...

What is Omegle?

Omegle is one of the more popular video chat sites available online. It pairs random users identified as ‘You’ and ‘Stranger’ to chat online via ‘Text’, ‘Video’ or both.

A user can also choose to add their interests, and Omegle will try to pair a user with someone who has similar interests. If not, you could meet anyone. Chats are anonymous unless the user states who they are. It’s free and no account sign up is required.

There are many imitation apps such as ‘Chat for Omegle’, ‘Free Omegle Chat’ and ‘Omeglers’, but there is no longer an official Omegle app. All sites and apps appear to share the same features and purpose, but only some are linked to Omegle. As such, parents and carers should check to see which apps kids have got installed on their phones and the risks presented with each.

Who uses Omegle?

Like most social media sites, Omegle has a minimum age rating of 13 years with parental permission. Without parental permission, users must be 18 years or older.

Omegle is particularly popular in the US, UK, India and Mexico. It is also extremely popular among children and young people because a lot of social media influencers use and post about it. For example, the #omegle hashtag has approximately 5 billion views on TikTok.

Is Omegle safe?

Risk of sharing or viewing inappropriate content

Omegle does not appear to have powerful moderation. It also does not require registration or have age verification, which makes young people a potential target for abuse online. Its site states “predators have been known to use Omegle, so please be careful.”

Children and young people may be asked by strangers to share their name, age and location. So, it’s also important to talk to your child about sharing personal information online with strangers.

A BBC investigation found sexually explicit videos and live streams involving minors as young as 7 or 8 which spread across the site during the Covid-19 pandemic. BBC alerted the relevant authorities. However, there is still a risk of users unexpectedly coming across pornography and other types of inappropriate content.

According to the BBC’s investigation, schools, police forces and governments have issued warnings about Omegle in the UK, US, France, Norway, Canada and Australia. There were also investigations into online child abuse on Omegle along with reports of racism, extremist views, scams and cyberbullying.

Attendance & Punctuality

Attendance Winners:

It's been a great start to term with very few absences. Our target is 96% and I'm pleased to announce that attendance is currently 96.96%

Year 2 have done it again - for the 1st 2 weeks of term they had 100% attendance! This week they've dropped slightly but they're still our top attending class with 99.27%! Well done Year 2!

Well done to the current Year 4s for the highest attendance in July last year - we hope they enjoy sitting on the benches in September 2023 during assembly.

Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive) , they will be liable to receive a penalty notice.

Currently the amount payable under a penalty notice is £60.00 per parent/carer per child if paid within 21 days. Thereafter the amount increases to £120.00 if paid between 21 and 28 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority will consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court. Please note that penalty notices are issued per parent/carer per child so a family of two parents and two children will receive 4 penalty notices.

Please view our Attendance Policy here for further information.
