In addition, many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid.

The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) helps eligible New York residents pay tuition at approved schools in New York State. Depending on the academic year in which you begin your studies, an annual TAP award can be up to $5,665. Because TAP is a grant, it does not have to be paid back.
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, more commonly known by its acronym SEOG, is a federal assistance grant reserved for college students with the greatest need for financial aid to attend school.
Understanding the FSEOG. The FSEOG assists low-income undergraduate students who need a lot of financial aid to help pay for college. Awards can range from $100 to $4,000 a year, depending on the amount of other aid you receive and the availability of grant funds at the school you're attending.
Each participating school receives a certain amount of FSEOG funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid. Once the full amount of the school’s FSEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more FSEOG awards can be made for that year. This system works differently from the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides funds to every eligible student.
The CSS Profile is an online application used by colleges and scholarship programs to award Institutional (their own)aid. (For federal aid you must complete the FAFSA, available Oct. 1 at fafsa.ed.gov.)
Check your colleges’ information to determine whether they require the CSS Profile. A list of participating colleges is also found on the CSS Profile Homepage. Some schools may also require divorced or separated parents to complete separate applications.
IDOC is a service that collects family financial documents and distributes them to institutions on behalf of the student.
Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.
Though you see work-study on your financial aid package, it is not guaranteed. You will need to find a job and secure the campus job.
Subsidized Loans: The federal government pays the interest while the student is in college or while the loan is in deferment.
Max Amount: $3,500
Unsubsidized Loans: Interest begins accruing as soon as the loan is taken out.
Max Amount: $2,000
The Parent PLUS Loan can be taken out after a student maxes out their Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans.
To receive a parent PLUS loan, you must
be the biological or adoptive parent (or in some cases, the stepparent) of a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school;
not have an adverse credit history (unless you meet certain additional requirements); and
meet the general eligibility requirements for federal student aid. (Your child must also meet these requirements.)
Financial Aid Package is the total amount of financial aid (federal and nonfederal) a student is offered by a college or career school. The school's financial aid staff combines various forms of aid into a “package” to help meet a student’s education costs. Because your financial aid package is created for you and is based on the cost of attending a particular school, your aid amounts will vary from school to school.
The following spreadsheet allows you to compare financial aid packages with examples and definitions. It is suggested to meet with Raychell or Ms. Henriquez when comparing packages.
