Meet the Design Technology Team

Mr Picca

My name is Mr Picca and I teach Design and Technology at Bullers Wood School for boys.

I have been teaching Design and Technology for the last 13 years. I graduated in Civil Engineering at the Institute of Engineering of São Paulo, Brazil. After taking part in the construction of a major bank headquarters’ in São Paulo I took some time off to travel around Europe visiting the major Museums and Medieval constructions. I visited and experienced works of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh and Cezanne, my art heroes. Eventually, I settled in England, where I studied fine art at Chelsea School of Art, Ba at Wimbledon School of Art and Master in Visual Arts at Goldsmiths College.

I worked at my art studio in Hackney in East London for 10 years preparing works for commissions and exhibitions until I had my children.

In the classroom I share the philosophy that there is no right and no wrong but everything has its value in time and has the potential to become something; then, just at that point are we able to reflect upon what we did and realise that it is in a state of change with power to move on towards success. Then, in the classroom, I do not allow: ‘Sir, I can’t do it’ or ‘Sir, I can’t draw’. I reply: ‘Yes, we can’. As Italo Calvino said: ‘Futures not achieved are only branches of the past: dead branches.

In my journey, the combination of my experiences as an engineer and as an artist has helped me to develop problem solving abilities and creativity together with the knowledge of materials, processes and machines. I love to work in the workshop and make 3D works with the students.

In my spare time I go to music gigs and play the guitar with my son. I am a Tate, Churchill Theatre and National Trust member. I play tennis on the weekends with my children. I have been practicing Capoeira, the Brazilian Marital Art for 16 years. I would love to start a Capoeira Club at Bullers Wood School. Would you join it?

Mrs Purcell

My name is Mrs Purcell and I am a DT teacher at Bullers Wood School for Boys. I graduated from University in 2010 with a BA in Fashion Design and I have since followed my dream to teach D&T to students. I have previously taught at Bullers Wood School Girls for a number of years where I taught D&T, Art and BTEC Art & Design.

I have lived and travelled in Australia for a year as I love to travel and explore. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, sewing, and I am currently trying to learn Spanish to help me on my travels.

At present I am on maternity leave but I look forward to meeting and seeing everyone soon.

Ms Harrison

My name is Ms Harrison and I am the Art and DT Technician here at Bullers Wood School for Boys.

A 25 year career as a Hair and Make-up Artist has allowed me to explore creativity in various ways from creating special effects for films to the full glamour of music video. After a varied and exciting time in the media industry I completed a DTTLS teaching certificate with Canterbury Christ Church University in order to move into education and help support young people in creative subjects.

Personal interests are art, graffiti, design, travel, vegetable gardening, carpentry and very top on the list; up-cycling and sustainability.

I would describe myself as a ‘nature loving city dweller with a curious streak’.

Through my role I really enjoy the collaborative school environment, hearing and encouraging the student's ideas and supporting them whilst they develop their individual skills.
